The ground-mounted solar projects have capacities of 15.1MWp and 5.0MWp, and were commissioned in March 2015 and March 2017. With over 62,000 solar panels installed over 41.5 ha, the projects are expected to generate sufficient power for 5,068 homes and reduce 7,716 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The projects receive revenues under the UK Renewable Obligations Certificates (ROC) scheme and under power sold via Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

The project is intended to demonstrate that co-production of high volume commodity fuels and low volume, high value co-products enables profitable biorefineries at commercial scale. ABBA integrates the biorefinery value chain by converting woody biomass to cellulose and cellulosic sugars, which are then converted to cellulosic biojet and nanocellulose.
The project received $3.7 million support from the US DOE Project Definition for Pilot- and Demonstration-Scale Manufacturing of Biofuels, Bioproducts, and Biopower program , the scope of which includes definition engineering, permitting and financing activities. Upon completion of Phase 1, the project will be eligible for up to $45 million in additional DOE support for project construction and operations.
The project will utilize AVAPCO's AVAP technology for co-production of biomass-derived lignocellulosic sugars, cellulosic ethanol, cellulosic butanol, nanocellulose, and lignin to demonstrate the conversion of cellulosic ethanol to ethylene. The Byogy Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) processing facility has been relocated to the Thomaston site as part of the project to convert the bio-ethylene to full replacement biofuels.

Gevo and LANL are looking to develop a low-cost, catalytic technology that would be bolted-on to Gevo's existing isobutanol-to-hydrocarbons process to produce high energy density fuels (HEDFs). With the successful scale-up of this technology, it is believed that Gevo's HEDFs could be produced at a lower cost than the petroleum-based equivalent. If this project is successful in scaling HEDFs cost-effectively, there may be an even broader application in the general aviation sector, enabling higher energy density jet fuel that would provide superior mileage to traditional aviation fuels.
Gevo produces isobutanol, ethanol and high-value animal feed in Luverne, Minnesota, and has developed technology to produce hydrocarbon products from renewable alcohols. For instance, in 2016, the Big Brown coal plant east of Waco, emitted 42,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) , 4,500 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and about 7.5 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). Under the old rule, the plant was required to cut SO2 by 97 pct, bringing its yearly emissions down to 1,380 tons. The reduction would have either required the plant to install expensive scrubbers. Under the new rule, the plant can continue to emit 42,000 tons of SO2.
According to Rice University civil and environmental engineering professor Dan Cohan,"The new proposal is a sham. It does nothing. It sets a cap that's higher than what those plants have been emitting for the past few years. Texas is allowing more power plants to keep burning coal un-scrubbed than anywhere else in the country.
Rather than do nothing, which would get [the EPA] sued for violating the Clean Air Act, the strategy appears to be to issue a rule that is so weak that it accomplishes nothing. But by having the rule there, they can claim that they're doing something. It's a very cynical approach to environmental protections." A key hurdle to claiming carbon neutral status will be proving reduction in use of energy, through the attainment of at least a 4 Star NABERS Energy rating or a 4 Star Green Star Performance rating. The average NABERS Energy rating is now 4.4 stars.
Buildings can either go for a base building rating or whole building rating, with the base building rating seen as a "stepping stone" towards whole building certification. The draft standard had a third pathway for certification for buildings that were ineligible for NABERS or Green Star rating -- directly through the federal government's Carbon Neutral Program -- however this has been deferred.
The standard covers energy efficiency and operational energy emissions from resource consumption and waste generation necessary for a building's day-to-day operations. Embodied energy is not included, however the standard said embodied energy from construction materials and processes may be considered in future versions.

Since 2013, the company's energy saving measures have resulted in a 19 pct cut in carbon intensity (kgCO2/m2). This PPA builds on Microsoft's strategic partnership with GE, announced last year. The wind farm will integrate GE's Digital Wind Farm technology, which makes renewable energy outputs even more reliable.
Microsoft is also acquiring an Irish energy supply license from GE. The supply license will benefit both Microsoft and the Irish power grid, as it allows the company the flexibility to easily grow and invest in renewable energy in Ireland over time. In Q2 2017, energy production through bioenergy and waste was 2.4 million tonnes of oil equivalent. Total energy production was 2.5 pct higher than in Q2, 2016. In Europe alone, the use of such vehicles in tandem with electrification could save 2.8 trillion kilograms of CO2 by 2050, according to Ulrich Schulmeister, Bosch's VP of engineering. Globally, CO2 emissions will have to be cut by half within the next 40 years if the Paris agreement climate targets are to be achieved, and they will have to be reduced by a minimum of 85 pct in developed countries.
According to Bosch, synthetic diesel and gasoline fuels commercialization pilot projects are underway in Norway and Germany. Since even classic cars can run on synthetic gasoline and current infrastructure can be used for refueling, it would take far less time to achieve a high degree of market penetration. AMP Americas' Fair Oaks Farms facility began production in 2011 and produces over 1.5 million gpy of renewable transportation fuel from dairy waste. The facility is the first, and to-date only, U.S. EPA Renewable Fuel Standard-certified dairy waste-to-vehicle fuel project in the U.S..
Construction is currently underway for a second RNG project using dairy digester methane gas, according to AMP.

MID secures most of its renewable energy credits (RECs) from wind farms in northwestern states and expects to meet California's 33 pct from renewable sources threshold in 2020, but would fall behind a higher mandate by 2023 without the new solar purchase.
MID will spend about $7 million a year buying solar power from NextEra Energy's Blythe IV solar farm in Riverside County near the Arizona border. "Gutting biodiesel under the Renewable Fuel Standard would bring an Iowa manufacturing success story to its knees, deal a blow to an already struggling farm economy, and shake the state economy. This is a major issue for the Midwest and U.S. agriculture, and we implore President Trump to stop his EPA administrator (Scott Pruitt) from forsaking this driver of American jobs, all in an apparent move to appease the oil industry.
"The market is already reacting to this impending blow. Commodity prices crashed on the news of EPA's indicated plans to cut biodiesel. We were already in the midst of a downturn in the ag economy, with many farmers in the red for the fourth year in a row. We have excess feedstock capacity due to a surplus of corn and soybeans on the market, which has lowered commodity prices. Gutting the RFS would exacerbate farmer struggles and could push us deeper into an agriculture recession. It could also cost thousands of Iowans their jobs as plants are forced to make cutbacks and even shutter their doors. We do not believe this is what President Trump wants for rural communities.
"Here in Iowa, many of us feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football as Lucy pulls it away. We have stood on the edge of expansion. Many of our plants have already spent millions of dollars on expansion, based on the promise of a growing RFS, and others have had further growth planned. This would mean more jobs, more dollars circulating through Iowa's communities, and more American manufacturing. We have the capacity to achieve this, but it is at a standstill."

In 2018, the lab plans to install a moving bed torrefaction reactor increase the output of briquettes. Another methodology, hydrothermal carbonization, will convert processed materials and agricultural products to an "energy mud" that can be used alone or "with other torrefied products to form solid fuels."
The NRRI bio-energy lab is partially funded by Xcel Energy, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Power, Heetway, K.R. Komarek, Inc. and the Consortium for Advanced Wood to Energy Solutions, which was launched in 2014.

The Neste report discusses key changes taking place in the energy, transport and chemicals markets. As global commitment to tackle climate change requires major efforts to reduce emissions, the use of fossil raw materials will inevitably need to decline in all of these sectors.
Neste estimates approximately 10 pct of the global car fleet will be electric cars by 2013 and that renewable diesel will remain a competitive solution for reducing transport emissions. By 2021, renewable diesel demand is expected to have doubled in North America, the Nordic countries and Europe. The company also believes that the problem of emissions from diesel vehicles can be solved, and that diesel technology will remain competitive for a long time to come.
Neste is also developing new business operations from bioplastics, a market that is expected to grow by more than 40 pct by 2021. About 80 pct of this growth is expected to come from durable biobased plastics, such as Neste's bioplastics solution, the demand for which is growing faster than for biodegradable plastics. Neste also expects 20 pct of its renewable business sales volume to come from from renewable jet fuel, renewable chemicals and bio-based plastics, according to a company release.

The IEA expects global renewable electricity capacity to rise by more than 920GW -- 43 pct -- by 2022, due to supportive policies for low-carbon energy and cost reductions for solar PV and wind.
In 2016, net additions to renewable energy capacity -- including hydropower, solar, wind, bioenergy, wave and tidal -- set another world record and grew by 165GW, 6 pct more than in 2015, the IEA said.

Upon completion by the end of December, 2018, the Los Hercules wind farm will see a total rated output of 97,2 MW. The wind farm will be built by Senvion on a full EPC basis. The wind farm is expected to generate sufficient power for approximately 64,000 homes per year.

The order comes as the Department of Interior (DoI) is moving to delay the rule until 2019, on the grounds that it is too burdensome to industry. The DoI tried earlier to postpone part of the rule set to take effect next year. The ruling found the DoI failed to give a "reasoned explanation" for the changes and offered no details on why an earlier analysis by the Obama administration was faulty.
The rule forces energy companies to capture methane that's burnt off or "flared" at drilling sites on public lands during production because it pollutes the environment. An estimated $330 million a year in methane is wasted through leaks or intentional releases on federal lands, enough to power about 5 million homes a year.
