Taking Stock of UK CO2 Storage Report -- Report Attached (Ind. Report)

Termination of the most recent Government carbon capture and storage (CCS) Commercialization competition late in 2015 was a major setback for the decarbonization of the fossil power and industrial sectors in the UK. This Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) reports covers what has been learned about the CO2 storage aspects of CCS and other aspects of CCS that have changed since Commercialization Competition was launched in 2013.

The report found that delaying the implementation of CCS at scale would add between £1 billion and £2 billion per year to the otherwise lowest cost options for an energy system capable of reducing carbon emissions in line with the 2050 emissions reduction targets. The report also found:

  • UK has the CO2 storage capacity to meet its need out to 2050 and beyond ;
  • Storage appraisal to date shows there are no technical barriers to the storage of CO2 in UK offshore sites;
  • Lowest cost CCS can be achieved by combining large scale storage store over 3MT/a with shared infrastructure and existing risk technologies.

  • Norwegians Ban Palm Oil Biofuel (Int'l. Report)

    In Oslo, the Norwegian parliament has amended the country's Public Procurement Act to immediately cease the importation and use of palm oil-based biofuel. Conservationists laud the move and recommend the EU's biofuel policy be updated to reflect concerns about palm oil.

    The growth of the palm oil industry has been blamed for damaging environmental impacts, such as deforestation and high carbon emissions and research indicates that palm oil biofuel may be worse for the environment and the climate than fossil fuels.(Source: Mongabay, EcoBusiness, Others, June, 2017)

    "For decades the palm oil industry in Southeast Asia has been inextricably linked to deforestation, habitat loss and peat destruction in some of the most biodiversity rich areas of the planet. While recent efforts to reduce the ecological footprint of palm oil production are well-intended, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, the Indonesian Palm Oil Pledge and a number of corporate commitments to halt deforestation, the current reality is that palm oil expansion is an ongoing environmental catastrophe.

    "Most palm oil is destined for human consumption, either as an ingredient or cooking oil, but in the last decade the most rapidly expanding vegetable oil market in the world has been biodiesel, driven in large part by European climate policy. In 2014, it has been estimated that over three million tonnes of palm oil biodiesel was consumed by EU vehicles, nearly a third of total EU biodiesel consumption. By tradition, biofuel carbon accounting treats land as a carbon-free commodity, a simplification that has allowed policymakers to believe that palm oil biodiesel is better for the climate than fossil diesel. Unfortunately, the truth is very different -- increased biodiesel demand in Europe drives palm oil expansion in Malaysia and Indonesia, and with that comes deforestation, peat drainage and biodiversity loss."

    Energy Absolute Touts Thailand Energy Storage Plans (Int'l.)

    Energy Absolute, a former Thailand-based biodiesel producer presently engaged in renewable energy power generation, reports that its renewable power plants will increase capacity to 404 megawatts this year and to 664 megawatts in 2018. The company also will expand into the energy storage sector with a product similar to Tesla's Power Wall.

    To that end, the company intends to construct a plant that will "rival Tesla's Gigafactory in both size and scope" at a yet to be determined Asian location. The new plant, which is expected to have a production capacity of 50 GWh by 2020, is expected to cost $2.9 billion. The company presently holds a 35.2 pct stake in Amita Technologies Inc., a Taiwan-based manufacturer of lithium ion and polymer batteries.     Hawaii's MECO Tops in Solar Energy Storage (Ind. Report)

    In the Aloha State, the Smart Electric Power Alliance has ranked Maui Electric Co. (MECO) in the top 10 out of 412 national utilities for connecting the most new solar watts in total and per customer to the grid.

    Energy storage projects on MECO grids include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the company's Wailea Substation in South Maui and projects with the independently owned Auwahi and Kaheawa wind farms on Maui and the Lana'i Sustainability Research solar farm. A BESS is currently being tested on Molokai, the utility added.

    Indian Oil Entering Battery Energy Storage Business (Int'l)

    In New Delhi, India's largest fuel retailer, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), reports it plans to launch an improved version of lead-acid battery for low cost mobility and industrial applications. The company is also working on lithium-ion battery chemistry for improved performance.

    India's energy storage market for rooftop solar and other off-grid renewable energy applications is expected to be worth Rs 16,500 crore by 2022, according to the Delhi-based not-for-profit Council for Energy Environment and Water (CEEW).     Aussie Carbon Capture Financing Options in Doubt (Int'l. Report)

    In the Land Down Under, the Liberal government of Prime Minister Malcolm B. Turnbull is seeking parliamentary approval for the nation's "green bank" -- the Clean Energy Finance Corporation -- to fund carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. Both Labor and the Greens oppose the change.

    The Labor party is opposed to the change and some Labor MPs question both the science and economic viability of the technology. The opposition also claims it is inappropriate for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to fund CCS since it is forbidden to do so under existing legislation.

    Proponents claim CCS has the potential to cut Australian coal and gas power plant emissions by as much as 90 pct. Opponents say CCS should be looked at for use in the manufacturing sector, to help industry cut emissions. (Source: APP, Various Media, June, 2017)

    Trump's EPA Renewable Fuel Standard Expected (Reg & Leg)

    Raizen Offers $245m for Brazilian Sugar Ethanol Facilities (Int'l, M&A)

    The two sugar and ethanol mills, Santa Candida in Bocaina and Paraiso in Brotas, both in Sao Paulo, will be sold through a court-supervised auction with sealed proposals.     U.S. Ethanol Prod. Falls to 15.54Bn Gal. Annual Rate (Ind. Report)

    In Washington, according to US Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, as analyzed by the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), US ethanol production averaged 999,000 bpd in April, down 21,000 bpd from the week before and a five-week low. The four-week average for ethanol production decreased to 1.014 million bpd for an annualized rate of 15.54 billion gallons.

    Ethanol stocks were 22.0 million barrels, down 3.5 pct from last week to the lowest level since late January. Average weekly gasoline demand plunged 5.1 pct from the previous week's record volume. Gasoline demand tallied at 391.3 million gpd for an annualized rate of 142.8 billion gallons.     New Online Green Building Materials Tool Launched (Ind. Report)

    North Adams, Massachusetts-based Integrated Eco Strategy reports the recent launch of Red2Green, a new healthy building materials selection tool modeled after the requirements of the Living Building Challenge. The Living Building Challenge is a green certification program and design framework developed by the nonprofit International Living Future Institute of Seattle.

    The Red2Green software program provides a building materials database that standardizes the process for gathering, reporting and comparing ingredients and emissions information on projects that are used in all phases of new building and renovation.

    The Living Building Challenge is similar to the US Green Building Council's LEED standards. Under the Living Building Challenge, developers are encouraged to construct buildings that are considered to be self-sufficient, remain within the resource limits of their site, produce more energy than they use.     "We Are Still In" on Paris Climate Agreement Declaration Represents 120 Million Americans and $6.2Tn U.S. Economy (Opinions, Editorials & Asides)

    A grand total of 1,219 governors, mayors, businesses, investors, and colleges and universities from across the U.S. or with significant operations in the U.S., representing the broadest cross section of the American economy yet assembled in pursuit of climate action, today declared their intent to continue to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in reducing carbon emissions.

    Together, these leaders are sending a strong signal to the international community and the 194 other parties to the Paris Agreement about the continued commitment of the U.S. to ambitious action on climate change absent leadership at the federal level. In the aggregate, the signatories are delivering concrete emissions reductions that will help meet America's emissions pledge under the Paris Agreement.

    Signatories include leaders from 125 cities, 9 states, 902 businesses and investors, and 183 colleges and universities. Participating cities and states represent 120 million Americans and contribute $6.2 trillion to the U.S. economy, and include Oregon and cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Houston as well as smaller cities like Pittsburgh and Dubuque. A mixture of private universities, state schools and community colleges have added their institutions to the statement. In total the businesses and investors account for a total annual revenue of $1.4 trillion and include over 20 Fortune 500 companies, including Apple, eBay, Gap Inc., Google, Intel, Microsoft, and Nike, in addition to hundreds of small businesses, have also signed the statement.

    The statement calls "The Trump administration's announcement [one that] undermines a key pillar in the fight against climate change [and a move which is] out of step with what is happening in the United States." The signers all understand that the Paris Agreement is a blueprint for job creation, stability and global prosperity and that accelerating the United States' clean energy transition is an opportunity -- not a liability -- to create jobs, spur innovation, promote trade and ensure American competitiveness. By declaring that "we are still in," the signatories are putting the best interests of their constituents, customers, students and communities first while assuring the rest of the world that American leadership on climate change extends well beyond the federal government.

    In addition to this statement, since Trump's announcement to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, 211 Climate Mayors have adopted the Paris Agreement goals for their cities, 13 Governors have formed the bipartisan U.S. Climate Alliance, and 17 governors have released individual statements standing by Paris. Today's statement embraces this rapidly growing movement of sub-national and civil society leaders, by announcing that not only are these leaders stepping forward, they are stepping forward together.     GE Energy Financial Touts Renewables Investments (Ind. Report)

    Stamford, Conn.-based GE Energy Financial Services (GEEFS) reported late last month that its cumulative investments in wind, solar and hydroelectric have surpassed $15 billion since 2006. GEEFS says the scope of its investment shows the increasing economic viability of fossil fuel alternatives and its ability to withstand President Donald Trump's decision last week to pull the U.S. out of the 2015 Paris climate accord.

    GEEFS presently invests about $2 billion to $3 billion each year -- $1 billion to $1.5 billion of which goes to renewable energy projects in 17 countries, including Mexico, Canada, India, Japan and France. Wind energy accounts for 75 pct of the total, 18 pct goes to solar and 7 pct for renewable technologies. Recent wind investments include the first U.S. offshore wind farm, located a few miles from Block Island, R.I., and the Merkur wind farm in the North Sea off the coast of Germany.     Inn2POWER Offshore Wind Energy Initiative Launched (Ind. Report)

    The EU is touting the launch of its Inn2POWER -- Innovation to Push Offshore Wind Energy Regions Initiative comprised of eleven partners from the five leading offshore wind clusters in the North Sea Region. It is the first project in which regional clusters from Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Germany will work together to link small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across borders to foster their involvement in innovative business collaboration.

    The goal is to expand innovation capacity, improve access to the offshore wind industry and provide targeted support to help SMEs develop transnational business connections and collaborative innovation.

    Gulf of Maine to Host Most Offshore Wind, says BOEM (Ind. Report)

    Researchers from U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) are projecting that the Northeast will make up about one-third of U.S. offshore wind generation by 2050. The agency cites high wind speeds and shallow water depths that "allow for more cost effective construction with currently available wind turbine platform technology" for its projection.

    Vestas Offers Massive 9.5-MW Offshore Wind Turbine (Int'l)

    Danish wind turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas is reporting the June 6th launch of its new V164¬9.5 MW offshore wind turbine with 80 meter blades weighing 35 tonnes each.

    According to Vestas, a single V164¬9.5 MW can generate sufficient energy for 8,300 uk homes. The V164¬9.5 MW Nacelle measures 20 meters long, 8m wide and 8m high, and has a swept area larger than the London Eye.     White House Confirms Receipt of EPA Clean Power Plan Rollback Rulemaking Document (Reg & Leg)

    The White House Office of Management and Budget is reporting receipt of the U.S. EPA's proposed rulemaking for rescinding the Obama administration implemented Clean Power Plan. The Plan calls for states to reduce electric power generation carbon emissions 32 pct below 2005 levels by 2030. It was central to U.S. international climate commitments to slash emissions 26 pct by 2025.

    The rulemaking to rescind the Clean Power Plan focuses on the Trump administration's often repeated contention that it is "illegal" and "too expensive for the Umited States." Environmental groups and advocates are fighting the move and the EPA still doesn't know whether the agency will try to replace the rule with less stringent standards which could also mean conceding that the agency will have to regulate greenhouse gases eventually.

    Floating Compressed Air Energy Storage System Being Developed in Malta (New Prod & Tech)

    The University of Malta Department of Mechanical Engineering reports it is developing a compressed air energy storage technology integrated into a floating platform that can support a number of offshore systems, including wind turbines.

    The Floating Liquid-piston Accumulator using Seawater under Compression (FLASC) uses a double-chamber compressed air system for large-scale energy storage in the offshore environment. The dual chamber concept eliminates wide pressure and temperature fluctuations.

    The FLASC concept developers -- Dr. Daniel Buhagiar during his Ph.D. research under the supervision of Prof. Ing. Tonio Sant -- are planning to construct a small-scale prototype for deployment later this year. Development of the prototype is being carried out in partnership with Medserv plc., with support from the Institute for Sustainable Energy of the University of Malta.     BIO, ABBC Seek Support for Summertime E15 Use (Ind. Report)

    In Washington, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) reports that over 25 advanced biofuel producers and trade associations have sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, asking them to support the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act (S.517)

    Under current law, E15 cannot be sold during the summer driving season in many states. In 1990, Congress limited the amount of evaporative emissions from vehicle fuel at 9 psi Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP). At the time, Congress specified that E10 would receive a 1 psi RVP waiver, in recognition of E10's overall lower emissions profile. S.517 will extend the RVP waiver to ethanol blends above 10 pct. The letter states, in part:

    "This legislation (S.517) is vital to the advanced biofuels industry, which is making significant progress in expanding production of advanced and cellulosic biofuels. Fixing the RVP issue will ensure that E15 can be sold year round in any state where E15 is approved and give our advanced and cellulosic fuels an opportunity to compete at the pump.

    "Moving to E15 not only reduces the cost of gasoline by between 5 and 15 cents per gallon, but also reduces emissions harmful to the environment. Recent analysis from the Biotechnology Innovation Organization indicates that in just the summer months E15 can reduce GHGs equivalent to taking 2.1 million vehicles off the road. In addition to the environmental benefits, the Energy and Environmental Studies Institute has written that E15 can lower the public health impacts from transportation emissions like cancer and asthma."

    Kenya Sees Bamboo as Hedge Against Climate Change (Int'l)

    In Nairobi, the Kenyan government reports it is bolstering the country's fight against the severe effects of climate change by planting and commercializing extremely hardy and fast growing bamboo in selected catchment areas. The plan is part of the country's Kenya Vision 2030 Initiative.

    The Vision 2030 Initiative bamboo planting program is designed to encourage and enable Kenyans to participate in environmental activities including climate change mitigation by developing small bamboo forests in pursuit of achieving the targeted 10 pct forest cover by 2030.

    CMC Supports 50 pct Marine Emissions Cut by 2050 (Ind. Report)

    The Great Lakes Chamber of Marine Commerce (CMC) is endorsing proposed international targets to reduce marine shipping's carbon emissions per ton-kilometer by 50 pct by 2050 in order to match the ambition of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

    In May, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) agreed to urge the UN agency, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to adopt the reduction objectives on behalf of the international shipping sector as a whole.

    The objectives endorsed by ICS include maintaining international shipping's annual total CO2 emissions below 2008 levels; reducing CO2 emissions across international shipping by at least 50 pct by 2050 compared to 2008; and reducing international shipping's total annual CO2 emissions by an agreed percentage by 2050, compared to 2008, as a point on a continuing trajectory of CO2 emissions reduction.     The World Green Building Council (WGBC) has warned that every building on the planet must achieve net-zero carbon by 2050 to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius, the limit enshrined in the Paris Agreement.

    The building sector -- responsible for 30 pct of global emissions, roughly equivalent to that of China -- has a tough challenge ahead to meet the Paris Agreement targets, according to the WGBC. Presently, there are only 500 net-zero commercial buildings and 2,000 net-zero homes around the globe.

    The report lays out specific actions that the private sector, governments and NGOs can take to ensure all new buildings operate at net-zero carbon by 2030 and that all existing buildings are renovated to operate at net-zero carbon by 2050.

    Santa Barbara, California-based Infinity Renewables' Iron Star Wind Project, LLC, will generate the wind power and use the Grain Belt Express Clean Line to transmit the energy from western Kansas, where wind power can be produced at one of the lowest costs in the country, according to the memo.

    According to a city renewable energy report, about 6.7 pct of the city's energy sources for 2016 were renewable, with 3.4 pct from wind, 3.1 pct from landfill gas and 0.13 pct from solar.     Since making its carbon pledge in 2008, Switzerland's second largest retailer has reduced its annual CO2 emissions by 24.8 pct.     The American Institute of Architects (AIA) today reaffirmed its commitment to climate change mitigation and announced it was opposing the administration's decision to withdraw the United States as a signatory to the Paris Agreement. That accord, signed in late 2015 within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), commits the international community to fighting harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

    According to AIA President Thomas Vonier: "The United States must remain a leader in the battle to cease harmful and needless practices that damage the planet and its climate, acting out of both environmental concerns and national economic interests. Instead of helping our economy, as the Administration contends, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement will put us behind our major global competitors.

    Donegal Hosts Ireland's Largest Wind Farm (Int'l Report)

    The Irish Farmers Journal is reporting the launch of the largest wind farm in Ireland. The 38-turbine facility came online last Thursday in Meenadreen, southwestern Donegal.
