Canadian Solar Scores $8 Mn for HiDM PV R&D (R&D, Funding)

Ontario-based solar panel maker Canadian Solar Solutions Inc reports it will receive close to $8 million ($6.1 million US) from Natural Resources Canada's (NRC) energy innovation programme to develop and test high-density (HiDM) PV panels.

The new HiDM panels will use a first-of-its-kind shingled module technology that can be adapted to any type of solar cell, and are 20 pct more efficient than conventional panels, according to a company statement. SocalGas Unveils Country's Largest RNG Facility (Ind. Report)

SocalGas, the largest natural gas distribution utility in the US, reports the completion of the Calgren dairy renewable natural gas facility in Pixley. The natural gas facility, developed in partnership with Calgren Dairy Fuels, is the first of its kind in California. SocalGas has provided Calgren with a $5 million incentive, authorised by the California PUC to support the project.

Calgren will collect cow manure from four dairy farms and process it using an anaerobic digesters to produce methane emissions which will then be used to produce transportation fuel. The digesters in the Calgren project are partially funded under California's Dairy Digester Research and Development Programme, which aims to reduce GHG emissions from manure generated at state dairy farms. California currently has about 30 operational dairy RNG projects and 50 under development.

A 2016 study by the University of California, Davis found California has the potential to produce approximately 90.6 billion cubic feet (bcf) per year of renewable natural gas from dairy, landfill, municipal solid waste, and wastewater treatment plant sources alone -- sufficient to meet the annual natural gas needs of around 2.3 million California homes. According to the U.S. DOE the U.S. currently produces 1 trillion cubic feet of renewable natural gas every year, and that number is expected to increase to 10 trillion by 2030. Generating Electricity in Canada from Wind and Sunlight: Is Getting Less for More Better than Getting More for Less? (Ind. Report)

Contrary to the common misconception that wind and solar power generation is relatively inexpensive, renewable energy comes with large yet often ignored costs that increase electricity prices for residents and businesses, according to a study from the not-for-profit Canadian public policy think-tank the Fraser Institute.

The study finds that while wind turbines and solar panels are relatively cheap to operate, and because the require back-up power sources and battery storage for non productive periods, they're costly to build and connect to the power grid.

Swiss researchers at ETH Zurich and the Paris-headquartered oil and gas giant Total report they've developed a new catalyst that efficiently converts CO2 and hydrogen (H2) directly into methanol and have jointly filed for a patent on the technology. Offering realistic market potential, the technology paves the way for the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals, the release claims.

The core of the new approach is a chemical catalyst based on indium oxide, which was developed by Javier Perez-Ramírez, Professor of Catalysis Engineering at ETH Zurich, and his team. The team of scientists have now succeeded in boosting the activity of the catalyst significantly, without affecting its selectivity or stability. They achieved this by treating the indium oxide with a small quantity of palladium.

The CO2 may be extracted from the atmosphere or—more simply and efficiently—from the exhaust discharged by combustion power plants. Even if fuels are synthesized from the methanol and subsequently combusted, the CO2 is recycled and thus the carbon cycle is closed.

Total now plans to scale up the approach and potentially implement the technology in a demonstration unit over the next few years. Methanol can be converted into fuels and a wide variety of chemical products, including those that today are mainly based on fossil resources. $287Bn Bill Would Subsidize AltFuel Stations (Reg. & Leg.)

Previously this week in Washington, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced the America's Transportation Infrastructure Act of 2019 which authorizes $287 billion in transportation funding over five years. The funding includes $1 billion in grant funding for electric vehicle charging and alternative fuels fueling facilities. The grant funds would be drawn from the federal Highway Trust Fund, which is financed by federal fuel taxes and related excise taxes, according to a statement from the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW).

On Tuesday, the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) and the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA) noted that current fueling locations -- such as the more than 153,000 U.S. convenience stores -- represent the "most logical option" for locating alternative fuel infrastructure. Swiss Researchers Tout CO2 Membrane Filter (New Prod & Tech)

In Switzerland, researchers at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL)reporting development of a new class of high-performance membranes that exceed post-combustion carbon capture targets by a significant margin. The membranes are based on single-layer graphene with a selective layer thinner than 20 nm, and have highly tunable chemistry, meaning that they can pave the way for next-generation high-performance membranes for several critical separations.

Current membranes are required to exceed 1000 gas permeation units (GPUs), and have a CO2/N2 separation factor above 20 -- a measure of their carbon-capturing specificity. The EPFL developed membranes show six-fold higher CO2 permeance at 6,180 GPUs with a separation factor of 22.5. The GPUs shot up to 11,790 when the scientists combined optimized graphene porosity, pore size, and functional groups (the chemical groups that actually react with CO2), while other membranes they made showed separation factors up to 57.2.

Carbon capture can be done using high-performance membranes, which are polymer filters that can specifically pick out CO2 from a mix of gases, such as those emitted from a factory's flue. These membranes are environmentally friendly, they don't generate waste, they can intensify chemical processes, and can be used in a decentralized fashion. They are now considered as one of the most energy-efficient routes for reducing CO2 emissions. EPA Ignored DOE in Issuing RFS "Hardship Waivers" (Ind. Report)

Contrary to assertions by the EPA the U.S. DOE confirmed in a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) that EPA issued so-called economic "hardship" exemptions under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to small refineries, often owned by billion-dollar oil companies, even when DOE found that the refineries faced little or no actual "hardship."

In a response to an April 10 letter from Grassley, Energy Secretary Rick Perry indicated that EPA had, on at least one occasion, issued an exemption when his department recommended no exemption and ignored recommendations to grant only partial exemptions in other cases. Perry also noted that the agency has not changed how these analyses are applied or scored from the prior Obama Administration.

Perry also noted that he was aware of instances in which DOE recommended a partial or even no exemption for certain refineries, yet EPA subsequently granted a full exemption. This contradicts former oil industry lobbyist and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's claim before Congress that EPA simply followed DOE's recommendations.

As previously noted, "hardship waivers" were intended for refineries producing 75,000 bpd or less and suffered "disproportionate economic hardship" from the costs of RFS compliance. The waiver frees the refineries from an obligation to provide the EPA with biofuels credits proving compliance Under Pruitt's direction, the EPA handed out 54 exemptions over two years and not a single request for an exemption was been denied. UK Exploring Funding Options to Drive Renewables, CCUS (Int'l)

In London, the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is touting renewable and nuclear energy fund proposals it says are critically important in reaching net-zero emissions. The proposals explore the use of the Regulated Asset Base (RAB) finance approach to attract significant private investment in major infrastructure projects like the Thames Tideway Tunnel which used the RAB model to reduce the cost of financing and risk for developers while limiting the long term impact on consumer energy costs.

The RAB funding model could also be used to reduce the costs of carbon dioxide storage. A funding model similar to the Contracts for Difference scheme, which provides developers with a set price for low-carbon electricity will be explored alongside other options to deliver investment in Carbon Capture Usage and Storage (CCUS) power projects while cutting emissions. The government aims to roll out the technology at scale by the 2030s, subject to costs coming down, as part of its commitment to become a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.

To that end, the government has committed £170 million towards deploying technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen networks in industrial clusters to support establishment of the world's first net-zero industrial cluster by 2040. Additionally, industry will consider investing up to £261 million in new technologies to reduce emissions. Plans have also been announced to make it easier to recycle oil and gas infrastructure for use in CCUS projects, including using some of the 20,000 km of pipelines and depleted oil and gas reservoirs to transport and store CO2. 33 MW Mali Solar Project Construction Set to Get Underway (Int'l.)

The landlocked African nation of Mali reports it is set to begin construction of a 33 MW Segou solar photovoltaic power plant in southern Mali. The $53.7 million project, which will incorporate 104,764 ground mounted solar panels, is being developed with Norwegian assistance in the design, construction and operations of the plant and 2.8 km of a 33kV transmission line.

The project will be implemented by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under a 25-year Build, Own and Operate & Transfer (BOOT) Concession Agreement with the Government of Mali (GoM) and a 25-year Take-or-Pay Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Energie du Mali (EDM), the country's national utility. When fully operational, the project will be connected to Mali's national grid via the substation of the state-owned Mali Electricity Company (EDM). Calls for Limited Building Glass to Save Energy (Ind. Report)

Architects and engineers are reportedly calling for all-glass skyscrapers to be banned because they are too difficult and expensive to cool. Although glass-fronted offices let in lots of natural light the sunlight also brings heat creating "greenhouse effect" that in sealed buildings ha nowhere to escape.

To avoid this greenhouse effect, air conditioning has been the standard solution, but, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), energy used on air condition has doubled since 2000 and presently accounts for about 14 pct of all energy consumed.

In obvious agreement with the IEA, in April NYC mayor Bill de Blasio said he would ban all-glass buildings and force developers to retrofit existing buildings to make them more energy-efficient, although the "ban" was later clarified to mean "excessive use of glass and steel." In the UK, London's mayor Sadiq Khan ruled out a similar plan but released regulations requiring construction firms to assess a building's energy use across its whole life-cycle and to use special types of glass that can block sunshine in hot weather, or even generate electricity themselves, such as the Edge building in Amsterdam. Ward County N.D. Wind Farm Put on Hold (Ind. Report)

NextEra Energy Resources reports its plan to revive a large wind farm in Hartland, Ward County, North Dakota has been put on hold. The company was considering a 150 turbine, 300 MW wind farm for the site, slighly smaller than the originally proposed 2,000-megawatt Hartland facility.

Toyota NA to Cut Carbon Emissions Through VPAAs (Ind Report)

Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor North America reports it is committing to aggressively reduce its carbon output in the US by entering into Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs) to reduce operation emissions by up to 40 pct over the next 3 years. The company plans to cut overall emissions from plant operations to zero by the year 2050.

Under the VPPAs, which the company expects to commence later this year, Toyota NA will contract with renewable energy providers to generate wind and solar power that will be provided directly to regional electric grids. The supply of renewable power is expected to reduce use of fossil fuels and emissions. By powering its operations from the enhanced grid and applying Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) earned by funding the generation of renewable electricity, Toyota expects to substantially offset emissions from its North American facilities. This VPPA endeavor supports the company's Environmental Challenge 2050 which sets out the following global objectives:

  • 90 pct reduction in global average CO2 emissions from new vehicles vs. 2010 levels;
  • complete elimination of CO2 emissions from the entire vehicle life cycle; zero emissions at all manufacturing plants worldwide;
  • minimizing water usage and implementing water discharge management protocols;
  • promoting global deployment of end-of-life vehicle treatment and recycling, and;

  • Renewable Energy Finance Initiative Launched in Bahrain (Int'l.)

    In Manama, the Bahrain Commercial Facilities Company (BCFC) is reporting the launch of the Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative (The Sun) aimed at encouraging the use of clean, renewable energy for comprehensive development and at reaching the country's goal of 5 pct renewable energy by 2025 -- 250 MW in 2025 increasing to 10 pct in 2035.

    The new financial scheme is based on the "Tenant-to-Owned" system, which provides an opportunity for the business sector to benefit directly and effectively from the installation of solar power systems in return for a monthly rent, which is determined by the amount of electricity generated and each buildings space available for solar panel installations.     N.D. Solar Farm Opens On Standing Rock Tribal Land (Ind. Report)

    In North Dakota, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reports its 300 KW CannonBall Community Solar Farm is now set to go online in August when it will add 300 KW into the grid.

    The community solar farm is expected to save the community as much as $14,400 per year in energy costs, which will be reinvested in the community. GivePower, one of the nonprofits that is partnering on the project, invested $370,000 in the $470,000 project.     Stora Enso Investing in Hard Carbon Lignin Pilot (Int'l.)

    Helsinki-headquartered Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso reports it is investing €10 million to build a pilot facility to produce bio-based carbon materials based on lignin at its Sunila Mill in Finland.

    The investment in making carbon materials for energy storage further strengthens Stora Enso's opportunities to replace fossil-based and mined raw materials as well as to connect sustainable materials to ongoing technology innovations, according to Stora Enso.

    With the new investment, Stora Enso will pilot the processing of lignin -- the main building block of trees -- into a hard carbon intermediate for electrode materials. This lignin will be converted into hard carbon anode materials for lithium-ion batteries with properties similar to graphite. Construction of the pilot facility is slated to get underway before the year end for completion by early 2021.

    For the second consecutive year, Boston has been ranked the top U.S. city for energy efficiency, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) 2019 City Clean Energy Scorecard's comprehensive look at any and all initiatives taken by cities to become more energy efficient.

    Boston city officials credit its Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) requiring all large and medium-sized buildings to report their annual energy usage and complete an energy savings action or energy assessment every five years.

    EgyptAir Operates Record Sustainable Jet Fueled Flight (Int'l.)

    In Cairo, Egypt's national air carrier, EgyptAir is reporting receipt of its newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The Dreamliner flew 10,973 kilometres from Seattle to Cairo fueled solely by sustainable aviation fuel to become the world's longest sustainable flight.

    EgyptAir is the first operator to use Boeing's new sustainable fuel delivery program that gives airlines the option to pick biofuel for aircraft delivery flights. Sustainable aviation fuels have been shown to help reduce aircraft CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent. The biodiesel biofuel used to power the Dreamliner was created from agricultural waste by Boston-headquartered World Energy at its Paramount, California facility which was designed to produce renewable jet fuel on a commercial scale. The agreement is focused on joint activities by USGBC and NBI intended to:
  • Improve capability of building industry professionals to deliver high-performance, zero energy and zero emissions buildings, as well as buildings that are optimized for grid interactions.

  • Drive increased numbers of zero (and net zero) energy, zero emissions and LEED Zero-certified buildings.

  • Extend adoption of stretch energy codes, and improve code compliance and enforcement.

    DOE Awards $2Mn for Performance Computing Energy Efficiency (Funding)

    In Washington, the U.S. DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) reports it has awarded $2 million in funding for seven new high performance computing projects, as part of the High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) Initiative.

    The initiative is a DOE-wide effort comprising EERE, the Office of Fossil Energy (FE), the Office of Science, and the National Laboratories. The initiative helps to leverage the National Laboratories' high performance computing capabilities to address challenges in manufacturing and materials through state-of-the-art modeling, simulation, and data analysis.   • Praxair Surface Technologies Inc. in Indianapolis will work with Ames National Laboratory to enhance the efficiency of metal powder production for additive manufacturing applications.

    Within the High Performance Computing for Materials (HPC4Mtls) Program, EERE's Vehicle Technologies Office has selected two projects:

  • PPG Industries will collaborate with LLNL and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to apply classical molecular dynamics simulations and density functional tight-binding calculations.

  • AK Steel in Middletown, Ohio will collaborate with ORNL on thermo-mechanical forming process development to produce tailored strength automotive structural components.   • EC Supports Six French Offshore Wind Farms (Int'l. Report)

    In Brussels, the European Commission (EC) reports the European Union's 28 member countries support six large offshore wind farms in French territorial waters and that the proposed projects are inline with, and thus qualify for, EU State financial aid. According to the EC release, the offshore wind projects will help France reduce CO2 emissions, in line with EU energy and climate goals, without unduly distorting competition in the single market.

    The six sites -- Courselles-sur-Mer, Fecamp, Saint-Nazaire, Iles d'Yeu / Noirmoutier, Dieppe / Le Treport and Saint-Brieuc -- are located in French territorial waters off the North-Western coast of France. Each of the wind farms will incorporate 62 to 83 turbines with an installed capacity of 450 to 498 MW per farm and will receive support in the form of feed-in tariffs over a period of 20 years.

    Construction of the first of the six wind farms is slated to begin construction this year for completion and commissioning in 2022. Once finalised, the wind farms will increase France's renewables generation capacity by about three gigawatts.

    With the new investment, Stora Enso will pilot the processing of lignin -- the main building block of trees -- into a hard carbon intermediate for electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries with properties similar to graphite. Construction of the pilot facility is slated to get underway before the year end for completion by early 2021. The hybrids yield about 9 percent corn oil -- nearly triple the normal production -- and are rich in the amino acids lysine and methionine, according to the release.

    Because of their higher calorie and nutrient content, Brownseed hybrids already enjoy steady growth in the livestock industry. Now, with its E+ hybrid, the company is taking aim at the corn-to-ethanol industry.     PSEG Plans Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 (Ind. Report)

    In the Garden State, Newark-based Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (PSEG), which claims one of the lowest carbon emissions rates among the largest U.S. power producers, reports it expects to cut its power fleet's carbon emissions by 80 pct by 2046, from 2005 levels, and attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, assuming advances in technology and public policy. PSEG also notes it has no plans to build or acquire new fossil-fueled power plants and is committed to reporting annually on sustainability and climate using the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework, starting in 2020.

    PSEG claims a long history of addressing climate change as an embedded part of its business and culture including:

  • PSEG's emission rate in 2017 was 461 lb/MWh, below the International Energy Agency's (IEA) "Beyond 2C Scenario" 2030 projected CO2 emission rate for the U.S. electric sector of 510 lb/MWh. PSEG's projected emission rate upon the completion of our coal exit strategy will be 334 lb/MWh.

  • PSEG's Salem and Hope Creek nuclear generating plants supply more than 90 pct of the Garden State's emissions-free power.

  • By 2021, PSEG will have retired or exited through sales more than 2,400 MW of coal-fired generation, thus nearing completion of its coal exit strategy. In June 2019, PSEG announced an agreement to sell its interest in the Keystone and Conemaugh coal plants in western Pennsylvania.

  • PSE&G energy efficiency programs are currently saving participants $242 million a year in energy costs and avoided emissions equal to removing 37,000 cars from the road for one year.

  • Looking forward, PSE&G's $2.5 billion Clean Energy Future investment proposal for 22 energy efficiency programs would allow participating customers to save $5.9 billion on their bills by helping them use less energy and reduce carbon emissions.

    Lallemand is reporting a long-term global partnership with Sao Paulo-based animal nutrition specialist ICC Brazil for the research, development and supply of inactive yeast products and fractions derived from sugarcane ethanol.

    ICC specializes in the production and supply to animal nutrition and pet food customers of secondary yeast derivatives from ethanol, including yeast cell walls, inactive dry yeast, autolyzed and mineral yeasts.

    According to Lallemand, the fermentation of sugarcane molasses or juices generates large quantities of spent yeast co-products that can be harvested and dried. Lallemand Animal Nutrition has expertise in the qualification of the chemical and physical structure of yeast cell wall, introducing new tools such as Atomic Force Microscopy and in vitro models to measure the binding capacities (against pathogens and/or toxins) and immune modulation effects of such products.

    Lallemand notes it has been working on the selection of specific yeast strains that offer unique properties while producing high yields of ethanol.

    Cement Giant Touts CO2MENT Carbon Capture Project (Ind. Report)

    Worldwide cement giant LafargeHolcim reports the launch of the 4-year, 3-phase CO2MENT project at its Richmond, B.C. cement plant in Canada. The project aims is to build the world's first full-cycle solution to capture and reuse CO2 from a cement plant while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

    The project, which will demonstrate and evaluate Inventys' CO2 Capture System and LafargeHolcim's various carbon utilization technologies, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2020. Subject to the pilot's success, the project will be scaled up to determine how it could be used at other LafargeHolcim plants.

    During the first phase the partners will work on purifying the cement flue gas in preparation for CO2 capture. The second phase will focus on the separation of CO2 from flue gas using a customized for cement version of Inventys' carbon capture technology at pilot scale. As part of the final phase, the captured CO2 will be prepared for reuse and support the economical assessment and demonstration of CO2 conversion technologies onsite, such as CO2 injected concrete and flyash.

    The $ 28 million (Cdn) system is expected to replace up to 50 pct of fossil fuel use with LCFs. It could also result in a 20 pct reduction of combustion emissions and divert approximately 100 000 tpy of waste from local landfills.

    Serb Scientists "Stressing" Algae for Biodiesel Production (R&D)

    Serbian scientists at the University of Belgrade's Institute for Multidisciplinary Research report they have increased the production of lipids in algae by around 30 pct through the method of "positive stressing" with sunlight which could contribute to the use of algae as a biological fuel and thus lower the price of biodiesel . The Institute already produces oxygen from microalgae.

    Under the title of Radiation Hormesis in the Service of Increasing Biomass Yields from Microalgae the project began in 2017, under the NATO programme Science for Peace and Security in cooperation with the University of Manchester, Baylor University in Texas, and UK-based Varicon Aqua Company which produces bioreactors and systems that grow microalgae.

    Lake Erie Wind Developers Meet the Opposition (Reg & Leg)

    In the Empire State, the Chautauqua County Legislature didn't pull its punches in passing two motions in unanimous opposition to the construct of wind farms on Lake Erie and its shores.

    Councilor Robert Bankoski(D-Dunkirk) cut right to the chase -- "We're not interested and you're not welcome here." County Executive George Borrell echoed his colleagues disdain -- "Wind turbines are destroying the economy and would destroy the lake. (Gov. Andrew) Cuomo's Green Energy Standard calling for more renewable energy is just partisan politics. (Wind farms) support a bogus political agenda. That's all it is. It is a horrible idea that has risen from the dead, again."

    RNG Producer AMP Americas Raises $75Mn for Expansion (Funding)

    Chicago-based AMP Americas, a clean-tech startup that turns cow manure into renewable natural gas (RNG) for transportation fuel, reports it has raised another $75 million for construction of two new facilities that would double its RNG production capacity. Solid location and ground breaking dates have not been disclosed .

    At its existing facilities, AMP produces 5 million gpy of biodiesel from waste processed at nearby dairy farms. The new plants will allow AMP to produce almost 5 million additional gallons.

    In addition to this new $75 million investment, AMP recently closed on an investment by an unnamed infrastructure investor as part of a recapitalization and sold its 20 ampCNG fueling stations to American Natural Gas for $41 million. It also launched an operating services business and expanded its RNG marketing and risk management business.

    AMP was the first company to bring dairy RNG to market and is the only producer delivering dairy renewable natural gas to California trucking fleets, including UPS, under the low-carbon fuel standard, according to AMP.     Brightmark Energy Acquires Wisconsin Dairy Biogas Project

    Following up on our 8th April coverage, San Francisco-based renewable energy development company Brightmark Energy reports the purchase of a 90,000 gpd dairy waste anaerobic digester project in Dane County , Wisconsin, from Clean Fuel Partners. Clean Fuel Partners will continue its work on the project by providing operations and maintenance support.

    The Dane County facility is the first such facility in the United States designed to receive biogas from multiple off-site locations and connect that renewable gas with RNG stations locally and across the nation.

    Chinese Firm Launches Zambian Cassava Ethanol Plant (Int'l)

    Serbia Announces €30Mn Energy Efficiency Fund (Int'l, Funding)

    In Belgrade, the Serbian government is reporting plans to launch a €30 million($33.4 million) energy efficiency fund in 2020. The money will directed towards residential projects.

    The current budget for energy efficiency projects is only €1.5 million and is specifically earmarked for municpal governments and their projects for schools, hospitals and other similar projects.

    The government has secured €10 million financing for the fund, while an additional €10 million will be provided by the European Union (EU).

    Windplus is reporting the installation of the first Windfloat Atlantic turbine on its three-turbine floating platform -- the first such platform in continental Europe and largest turbine ever to be installed on a floating platform -- is underway in the outer harbor of Ferrol, Spain.

    The project belongs to the Bremen, Germany-based Windplus consortium, which is jointly owned by EDP Renovaveis with 54.4 pct, ENGIE with 24 pct and Repsol at 19.4 pct and Principle Power Inc. with the balance. The project will incorporate 3 Vestas turbines to collectively deliver an installed capacity of 25 MW -- sufficient power for 60,000 homes in one year.     Two Argentinian energy majors, Buenos Aires-based Genneia and Pan American Energy (PAE), are reporting a joint wind energy development agreement for two wind power generation projects -- Chubut Norte III and IV -- near the city of Puerto Madryn in Chubut. The estimated investment will be around US $ 190 million, to offer a wind farm of 140 MW and will deliver energy equivalent to the consumption of 197,000 homes.

    Both wind farms are currently under construction with a total of 32 wind turbines that will be connected to the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI) from Q2, 2020.     In the Land Down Under, mining giant BHP Billiton is touting a five-year plan that will see the company spend $400 million on carbon capture and storage (CCS) and other technologies and measures to reduce carbon emissions. The plan also ties the group's executives remuneration packages closer to meeting environmental targets.

    According to Group CEO Andrew Mackenzie, "For many years performance against emissions targets has been considered in BHP's executive remuneration plan. From next financial year we will clarify and strengthen this link and further reinforce the strategic importance of action to reduce emissions."

    ABM Energy Performance Program Could Save $2.6Mn (Ind. Report)

    National facilities management services provider ABM reports it has initiated an Energy Performance Contracting program for Saint Joseph County, Michigan. The company's customized energy efficiency-energy performance program is projected to save the County more than $2.6 million in energy and operating costs over a 15-year period. Revenue from savings will address aging infrastructure needs, without having to raise taxes.

    Highlights of the project, which is expected to to conclude in 2020 include:

  • Retrofitting lighting systems to energy-efficient LED lighting, and replacing or retrofitting HVAC units, which will be controlled by state-of-the-art HVAC control systems to maximize energy and operational efficiency;
  • Replacing an inefficient boiler and chiller system at the Saint Joseph County Courthouse;
  • Installing building automation controls, providing officials with the ability to remotely monitor and address maintenance needs;
