OMPA Adding 40-MW of Wind to Power Mix (Ind. Report)

In the Sooner State, the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) is reporting the addition of 40 more megawatts of wind energy to its resource portfolio. The new wind generation is the product of a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Grant Plains Wind Farm in Grant County, Oklahoma.

The 2016-vintage, 64-turbine wind farm has an overall capacity of 147 megawatts and was constructed by Apex Clean Energy. OMPA, which supplies power to 42 Oklahoma communities, sources 26 pct of its overall power from renewables. Equinor Announces Major GHG Reduction Goals (Int'l, Ind. Report)

Oslo-headquartered Norwegian oil and gas major Equinor -- fka Statoil -- reports it aims reduce the absolute greenhouse gas emissions from its operated offshore fields and onshore plants in Norway by 40 pct by 2030, increasing to 70 pct by 2040 and to near zero by 2050, using 2005 as a baseline.

The GHG reduction goal will cover all of the company's Norwegian offshore fields and onshore plants, including both Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of CO2 and methane, levels of which are very low at the Norwegian continental shelf.

The reductions will be achieved through large scale industrial measures, including energy efficiency, digitalization and the launch of several electrification projects at key fields and plants, including the Troll and Oseberg offshore fields and the Hammerfest LNG plant, at an estimated cost NOK 50 billion ($5,630,500,000 US) or more. N.Carolina Hog Waste-to-Biofuel Project In Production (Ind. Report)

Smithfield Foods, OptimaBio LLC and Duke Energy North Carolina are reporting biofuel production at their $14 million hog waste-to-biofuel project at Smithfield's Tar Heel pork processing plant in North Carolina is now underway. The project can produce up to 140,000 dekatherms per year of renewable natural gas (RNG).

The Tar Heel project utilizes a gas upgrading and injection system operated by OptimaBio, LLC, a bioenergy project developer, which leverages the facility's 3 million gpd wastewater treatment system to collect and clean biogas through an existing on-site anaerobic digester and convert it into RNG.

Smithfield operates similar hog wastewater-to-energy projects at its Milan, Mo.; Grayson, Ky.; and Sioux Falls, S.D. facilities, which are used to power their modified steam boilers. Solar Array Slated for SWAECC's Texarkana HQ (Ind. Report)

Chicago Skyscraper Rises to USGBC Platinum Energy Efficiency Certification (Ind. Report)

Following up on our November 9, 2018 coverage, in the Windy City, Equity Office, the U.S. office arm of private-equity giant Blackstone Group, reports its 1974-vintage, 110-story Willis Tower -- fka the Sears Tower -- has became the largest building in the U.S. to reach the US Green Building Council's LEED Platinum certification for energy efficiency. The building received a $500 million energy efficiency and sustainability upgrade in 2018.

As previously reported, the building scored LEED Gold in 2018. In moving up to Platinum, building efficiency was improved via upgrades to heating and cooling systems, hot water generators, lighting, plumbing and an ongoing major overhaul of the elevator systems which make more than 46,000 trips daily and serve about 5.8 million people every year. China Scraps National E10 Ethanol Blend Program (Int'l. Report)

In Beijing, it is being widely report that China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has suspended its planned implementation of a nationwide E10 gasoline-ethanol blend program due to a sharp decline in the country's corn stocks and limited biofuel production capacity.The few provinces that have already implemented full or partial blends will, however, continue the program.

In 2018, China was the eighth-biggest market for U.S. ethanol exports, taking up 52.9 million gallons of the corn-based fuel, according to the RFA. Reaching the 2020 target would have required about 15 million tonnes of the biofuel annually, more than four times current output, or some 45 million tonnes of corn -- roughly 16 pct of the country's current consumption, according to Reuters. Cenovus Claims Targeted CO2 Emission Intensity Cuts (Ind. Report)

On the Canadian prairies, oil-soaked Alberta-based integrated oil and gas company Cenovus Energy has unveiled plans to reduce per-barrel greenhouse gas emissions by 30 pct by the end of 2030 with the end goal of net -zero emissions by 2050.

To that end, the company will reclaim 1,500 decommissioned well sites, complete $40 million ($30.65 million US) of caribou habitat restoration work by 2030, and institute a comprehensive climate and greenhouse gas emissions strategy to help it reach targets. €3.7Bn Invested in Ukrainian Renewables in 2019 (Int'l. Report)

Reporting from Kiev, the Ukrainian State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine is claiming €3.7 billion was invested in record high 4,500 MW of renewable energy capacities in Ukraine in 2019.

According to the agency, 3,537 MW of solar power, 243 MW of wind power, 637 MW of biomass, 73 MW of biogas and 15 MW of mini hydropower facilities were installed in 2019. With these installation, Ukraine's total green energy capacity now stands at 6.8 GW, according to the agency's report. Indonesia Set for B40 Palm Oil Biodiesel Road Tests (Int'l Report)

In Jakarta, the Indonesian Energy Ministry reports it will start road tests for a 40 pct (B40) palm-oil biodiesel and gasoline blend in April, this year. Depending upon test result, the B40 blend would be launched in 2021-22.

In 2019 Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, increased the mandatory bio-content of its biodiesel programme to 30 pct (B30) in a move to cut the country's energy imports and increase palm oil consumption. Cielo's Aldersyde Renewable Fuels Refinery Now Online (Ind Report)

Following up in our October 2nd coverage, Vancouver-based Cielo Waste Solutionm is reporting contractors have completed optimization of the design of the world's first waste-to-renewable fuels refinery at Aldersyde in Alberta, Canada.

The Aldersyde refinery, which produces renewable naphtha and diesel from wood biomass, is presently operating at roughly 100 lph to be increased to 200 litres per hour. The company notes it is working with the Alberta Government to secure amendments to its operating permit to allow additional waste feedstocks to be utilized. Penna. Governor Sets Energy Use, Efficiency Goals (Reg & Leg)

In Harrisburg, Governor Tom Wolf (D) reports the issuance of an executive order under which the Keystone State will aim for a 3 pct reduction in state government electricity, natural gas and steam use for commonwealth facilities. That executive order also established the inter-agency GreenGov Council, which is implementing new and analyzing existing state agency energy and sustainability strategies.

A key contributor to the initial 3 pct reduction is investments through the state's Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) program, which allows public entities to fund energy efficiency projects with the savings from reduced energy costs. The GESA program expanded to 13 projects investing over $124 million in energy efficiency upgrades, saving $6.8 million each year. Action is also being taken to meet the executive order’s high-performance design criteria into its facility design and construction practices. To date, 11 state-owned buildings, along with one build-to-suit leased building, are being designed or in construction to meet or exceed the high-performance building standards. Pennsylvania Sets Carbon Pollution Reduction Goals (Reg. & Leg.)

In Harrisburg, Keystone State Governor Tom Wolf (D) has announced the signing of an executive order establishing the first statewide goal to reduce carbon pollution in Pennsylvania. The commonwealth will work to achieve a 26 pct reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and an 80 pct reduction by 2050, from 2005 levels.

The executive order also establishes the GreenGov Council to serve as a central coordinating body to encourage and coordinate the incorporation of carbon emissions relate environmentally sustainable practices into the commonwealth government's policy, planning, operations, procurement, and regulatory functions, and strive for continuous improvement in efficiency and performance. SaskPower CCS Facility Captured 616,000 tons in 2019 (Ind. Report)

On the Canadian Prairies, SaskPower reports its carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at its Boundary Dam Power Station captured 57,590 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the month of December, for a total of 616,119 tonnes captured in 2019. The facility's average daily capture rate in December was 2,504 tonnes with a peak one-day capture rate of 2,863 tonnes. The facility was online 72 pct of the time, compared with an average of 70 pct for the previous 12 months.

Iberdrola Completes Europe's Largest Solar Plant (Int'l Report)

Madrid-headquartered renewable energy giant Iberdrola is reporting completion of the 500-MW Nunez de Balboa solar project -- the largest in Europe -- according to Iberdrola. The facility is now being tested by Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) and is slated for full commercial operation in Q1, 2020.

The €290 million ($325 million) facility incorporates solar panels from Chinese manufacturers Suntech, Longi and GCL-SI. Canada's Largest Solar Project Set for Groundbreaking (ind. Report)

On the oil-soaked Canadian prairies, Calgary-headquartered Greengate Power Corporation reports it will soon break ground on what it claims will be Canada's largest operating solar project -- the $500 million Travers Solar project with a total generating capacity of 400 MW. The project will incorporate approximately 2.5 million PV modules across 4,700 acres in Vulcan County, Alberta.

Construction is slated to begin sometime during the first half of 2020, with full commercial operations targeted for 2021.

Greenbacker Acquiring Empire State Solar Portfolio (M&A, Ind Report)

Closings to take place throughout 2020 and the facilities are slated to be fully operational in 2021.

The portfolio will sell a portion of the renewable energy credits generated to an investment grade off taker through a 20-year fixed price contract and will sell the remaining portion of energy and Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) attributes generated to two utilities through fixed price 20-year contracts. Liberty's Kansas, Missouri Wind Farms Work Underway (Ind Report)

Liberty Utilities reports work is underway on a 600-MW wind project in southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas.

In Missouri, the North Fork Ridge Wind Farm north of Joplin has begun construction and work on the King's Point Wind Farm near Golden City is expected to begin in February. Both wind farms will incorporate 69 wind turbines generating a total of about 300-MW, according to the Joplin Globe.

Duke's Mesteno Windpower Project in Texas Now On Line (Ind. Report)

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial business unit of Duke Energy, reports its 200-MW) Mesteno Windpower project in Starr County, Texas began commercial operation on Dec. 31, 2019. It is Duke Energy's fourth wind generation facility in Starr County and its eleventh in Texas.

The project's output will be sold into the ERCOT market and Duke Energy Renewables has entered into a long-term hedge agreement covering the majority of the expected wind energy production. The 200-MW Mesteño wind facility will generate sufficient power for about 60,000 average homes.

Duke Energy Renewables, a non-regulated unit of Duke Energy, operates wind and solar generation facilities across the U.S., with a total electric capacity of 3,000 MW. JetBlue Going Green with Carbon Offsets and Neste (Ind. Report)

U.S. air carrier JetBlue reports as of July, 2020 it will offset jet fuel CO2 emissions from all domestic flights. The airline will also use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on flights departing San Francisco International Airport, beginning in July.

JetBlue has run targeted offset programs since 2008, addressing a total of 2.6 billion pounds of emissions. The new program aims to offset 15-17 billion pounds each year.

JetBlue will also continue to partner with Carbonfund.org -- a leading U.S. based nonprofit carbon reduction and climate solutions organization. Since 2008, JetBlue has offset more than 2.6 billion pounds of CO2 emissions in partnership with Carbonfund.org. JetBlue's new carbon offsetting partners now also include established experts in the space -- EcoAct and South Pole. Commercial-Scale Cement Plant CCS Initiative Announced (Ind Report)

Burnaby, British Columbia-based Svante Inc., LafargeHolcim, Oxy Low Carbon Ventures, LLC, and Paris-based Total SA are reporting a joint study to assess the viability and design of a commercial-scale carbon-capture facility at the Holcim Portland Cement Plant in Florence, Colorado.

The study will evaluate the cost of the facility designed to use Svante's technology to capture up to 725,000 tpy of CO2 from the cement plant, which would be permanently sequestered underground by CO2 management and storage specialist Occidental.

This joint initiative follows the recently-launched Project CO2MENT between Svante, LafargeHolcim and Total in Canada at the Lafarge Richmond cement plant, where progress has been made towards re-injecting captured CO2 into concrete. Russian Long Range Climate Change Plans Quashed (Int'l Report)

Following up on our 23rd October, 2019 coverage, The Moscow Daily is reporting the Kremlin has drastically watered-down its new national carbon trading system and penalties for major emitters as part of its climate change plan in the face of resistance from the country's largest companies and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP). The government will however, go ahead with proposals to measure and collect data on emissions as part of a five-year green audit, according to the Moscow Daily report.

Following the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, the Russian government proposed introducing new climate legislation in two phases -- a five-year stock-taking exercise to measure company-level emissions and set appropriate quotas for reducing emissions and a carbon cap on the country's biggest polluters and penalties for those that exceed their quotas. Earlier plans also envisaged the creation of a national fund to support emissions reduction and a system of nation-wide carbon trading. PSEG Trumpets Customer Energy Efficiency Savings (Ind. Report)

PSEG Long Island is reporting its energy efficiency initiatives and energy efficiency improvements have saved its business and residential customers an estimated $280 million on their energy bills in the last six years. According to the utility, energy savings are the result of upgraded lighting, appliances, heating and cooling systems, and other energy-efficiency modifications that resulted in $265 million in rebates, in addition to the $280 million in estimated energy savings.

The utility claims the effort saved 1.6 billion kilowatt hours of energy since Jan. 1, 2014, the equivalent of powering 191,530 homes for one year. Business customers saved money in the past six years by completing 20,000 energy efficiency projects, which earned them a collective $161 million in rebates and incentives, according to PSEG Long Island. Suncor Challenges EPA RFS Waiver Denial (Ind. Report, Reg & Leg)

Denver-based Suncor Energy U.S.A. Inc., a unit of Calgary, Alberta-based Suncor Energy, reports it has filed an appeal of the US EPA's October 2019 decision in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in Denver. The agency recently finalized a rule designed to account for biofuel gallons waived from the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

In its appeal, Suncor, which received waivers for what were previously two refineries in Commerce City, Colorado, argued the agency's action was "arbitrary, capricious, and not otherwise in accordance with law." The EPA reportedly rejected Suncor's petition because the refineries no longer meet EPA's definition of a small refinery, which produces 75,000 bpd or less. Suncor previously received waivers for what were two small refineries, one that produced nearly 33,000 bpd and another at nearly 67,000 in 2018. The refineries were among the original facilities to receive waivers in 2006.

According to the company's website, since 2006, Suncor has been making a significant impact in Canada's emerging biofuels industry. Suncor is using revenues from oil sands development to invest in biofuels, particularly ethanol produced from corn. Ethanol is a cleaner burning, renewable resource. The ethanol production industry is expanding in Canada and the United States. New government regulations require that a percentage of ethanol be blended into fuels to reduce the environmental impacts of vehicle emissions. Minn. Communities Adopt Building Energy Benchmarking (Ind Report)

In the Badger State, the cities of Edina and St. Louis Park are reporting the adaptation of energy benchmarking to help landlords reduce natural gas and electricity consumption. They join more than 30 cities across the country that have benchmarking ordinances to reduce energy consumption and cut related costs.

In adopting energy benchmarking, both suburbs sought assistance from the Efficient Buildings Collaborative, a Hennepin County program that helps Minnesota municipalities develop energy benchmarking policies. Next summer, both cities will ask commercial, government and apartment owners to submit data that will eventually include properties of 25,000 square feet or larger. The suburbs will use the U.S. EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, a free online tool, and receive technical assistance from Denver-based Overlay Consulting.

Moscow says Nyet to Fossil Fuel Reductions (Int'l. Report)

The Barents Observer is reporting Russia's response to climate change includes no measures aimed at reducing fossil fuels extraction. On the contrary, the country intends to continue to boost production of the world's top climate change triggering hydrocarbons -- oil, gas and coal.

In 2019, Russian oil production totaled 560 million tons, natural gas amounted to 738 billion cubic meters, and coal production increased to 440,7 million tonnes -- a 30 pct increase over a seven year period -- and is expected to reach as much as 670 million tonnes within 15 years.

Since the mid-1970s, Russian air temperatures have increased by an average of 0,47 degree С per decade, which is 2,5 times more than the average global temperature increase. Other climate change impacts include more extreme weather, the melting of permafrost, more drought and flooding, loss of biodiversity, infectious diseases outbreaks and a the violation of the entire environmental balance.

Even so, the Kremlin reportedly has no coherent plan to fight climate change and, as noted in its 2019 Energy Doctrine, the Kremlin asserts Russia's position as an energy superpower is challenged by international efforts to combat climate change and the rapid shift to a "green economy" must be perceived as a foreign policy challenge and an issue of concern. SAF Availability Increased at San Francisco Airport (Ind Report)

Shell Aviation reports it has teamed up with World Energy to develop a scalable supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), approximately one million gallons of which will be reportedly provided to the German air carrier Lufthansa, at San Francisco Airport in the US.

Maine Leg. Commission Recommends Energy Storage (Ind Report)

In Augusta, a panel of Maine State lawmakers and stakeholders is recommending the state set an initial goal of adding 100 MW of energy storage by 2025. The panel is calling for "achievable" near-future policy actions, paired with further study and investigation to inform future policy action.

The panel's report noted energy storage could help Maine reach its renewable energy goals, which climb to 80 pct of retail sales by 2030 and 100 pct by 2050. To that end, the report recommended offering incentives for energy storage to be included with renewable energy procurements. The report also recommends the Efficiency Maine Trust, which oversees the state's energy efficiency programs, be given the authority to use energy storage to lower peak demand, and that the Maine PUC should consider time-of-use rates to support energy storage as well as clarify utility ownership for energy storage facilities. The report also suggested the Governor's Energy Office conduct an in-depth study on the costs and benefits of energy storage and propose future energy storage targets based on its study. San Antonio-headquartered Valero Energy Corp., the second-largest U.S. oil processor by capacity, and the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers organization have filed a court petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to determine whether the U.S. EPA is required to consider petitions to change the "point of obligation" under the Clean Air Act's Renewable Fuel Standard.

The petition notes: "The Clean Air Act's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program requires EPA to undertake annual notice-and-comment rule making to determine a 'renewable fuel obligation' for the nation's transportation fuel supply. The first of three annual 'required elements' is to determine the point of obligation -- i.e., to ensure that the obligation shall be applicable to refineries, blenders, and importers, as appropriate. EPA admits that it initially placed the point of obligation on refineries and importers, but not blenders, for reasons of administrative convenience. EPA has repeatedly refused to re-examine that placement in annual rule making, and it denied petitions for rule making seeking reconsideration out-side the statutorily-mandated annual assessment."

The petition specifically questions: whether the requirement that EPA "shall" make a "calendar year" determination of the "appropriate" point of obligation requires EPA to consider in each annual rule whether the point of obligation remains appropriate.The petition also questions whether EPA can evade the annual duty by partitioning the point of obligation into a one-time collateral proceeding that ignores key evidence,relies primarily on the agency's own convenience, and claims more deference from a reviewing court than an annual rule would receive. The building was designed by Curtis + Ginsberg Architects. The voluntary Passivhaus standard entails:
  • Annual heating and cooling needs of now more than 15 kWh/m2 (4,755 BTU/sq ft; 5.017 MJ/sq ft) -- or, alternately, a peak heat load of 10 W/m2 (1.2 hp/1000 sq ft);

  • Energy needs of no more than 60 kWh/m2 (19,020 BTU/sq ft; 20.07 MJ/sq ft) per year;

  • Near-complete air-tightness -- leaking under 0.05 cubic feet per minute -- less than 0.6 times the house volume per hour at 50 Pascals;

  • Passive solar design (primary windows facing towards winter sun, compacts house design, etc.);

  • Insulation and/or super-insulation;

  • exterior wall color choices made based on specific climate;

  • Possible low-volume heat recovery ventilation systems;

    Reuters is reporting global oil refiners have "upgraded processing units and adjusted operations to raise output of low-sulphur residual fuels and marine gasoil (MGO) to prepare for stricter shipping fuel standards that kick in on Jan.1, 2020."

    The new London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards prohibit the use of fuels containing more than 0.5 pct sulphur, compared with 3.5 pct through the end of December, unless the ship is equipped with exhaust-cleaning "scrubbers".

    The shipping industry consumes about 4 million bpd of marine bunker fuels, and the rule changes will impact more than 50,000 merchant ships globally, opening a significant new market for fuel producers.     In London, the UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced funding for four British plants producing biofuels from feedstock including household waste, unused straw from farmland and old wood.

    According to the DfT release, two of the projects are being funded under the government's £20 million Future Fuels for Flight and Freight Competition (F4C).

    KEW Projects and Rika Biogas have been awarded a share of £6.5 million for the production of biofuel for trucks. The KEW project will also begin research on aviation biofuel.

    Tow additional projects being funded under the £25 million Advanced Biofuels Demonstration Competition (ABDC) are in the final stages of development. This includes Nova Pangaea Technologies which will focus on the production of bio-ethanol from wood waste that can be blended with existing petrol used in road transport.

    These latest investments build on the government's push to go further and faster to harness innovation, drive down emissions and improve air quality -- including through the ground-breaking Transport Decarbonisation Plan which will set out plans to end the UK's transport emissions by 2050, according to the DfT website.     Renewables 46 pct of Germany's 2019 Energy Mix (Int'l. Report)

    Reuters is reporting renewable energy accounted for 46 pct of Germany's power in 2019 -- up roughly 5 pct from the previous year. Germany, which is Europe's biggest economy, is aiming for renewables to provide 65 pct of its power mix by 2030. The country also plans to completely abandon nuclear power by 2022 and is planning an exit from coal.

    Out of last year's total power production of 515.6 TWh, solar, wind, biomass and hydroelectric generation together produced 237.4 TWh. In 2019, wind power, both onshare and offshore, produced 127.2 TWh for a 24.6 pct share of the total mix. Solar produced 46.5 TWh, biomass producers generated 44.4 TWh while hydropower generated 19.2 TWh of power, according to data from the Fraunhofer organisation of applied science.     Enel Announces US Wind, Solar Project Startups (Ind Report)

    Enel Green Power (EGP) reports it has begun operations at two renewable energy plants in the United States. The projects include the first 252 MW phase of the 497-MW Roadrunner solar project in Upton County, Texas, and the 66 MW Whitney Hill wind power project developed by Swift Current Energy in Logan County, Illinois.

    This announcement follows the recent start of operations of 450 MW of EGP's High Lonesome wind farm in Texas bringing the company's total new renewable capacity added in the US in 2019 to nearly 800 MW with another 1 GW currently under construction across six renewable energy projects.     Michigan Anaerobic Biodigester Nears Commissioning (Ind. Report)

    The city of Grand Rapids, Mich, (pop. 200,000 +-) is reporting construction of its $57 million wastewater treatment plant anaerobic biodigestion facility is nearing completion and commissioning.

    The biodigester facility includes 3 tanks with a total capacity of 1.4 million gallons. Two tanks will be used for municipal biosolids and the other tank is an anaerobic membrane bioreactor to quickly reduce food waste and other organic waste to energy and increase energy efficiency. The project is part of the city's effort to use 100 pct renewable energy to power city buildings by 2025.     Canon City Colorado Community Solar Garden Completed (Ind Report)

    Cheyenne, Wyoming-headquartered utility Black Hills Energy and its approved third-party partner, Louisville, Colorado-based Clean Energy Co are reporting completion of a 2-MW community solar garden in Canon City, Colorado -- the fifth community solar garden in Black Hills' service territory.

    Canon City holds roughly 40 pct of the solar garden's subscription capacity and the county has about 15 pct with remaining subscribers in Fremont, Custer and Pueblo counties.     Energy Efficiency, Green Buildings Key in Vancouver Greenest City 2020 Action Plan (Report Attached)

    In British Columbia, the city of Vancouver has released its Greenest City 2020 Action Plan (GCAP) which builds on the 2009 work of Mayor Gregor Robertson's Greenest City Action Team -- local experts researched best practices from leading green cities around the world.

    According to the GCAP overview, Vancouver aims to cut community-based greenhouse gas emissions to 5 pct below 1990 levels, even though the city's population has jumped 27 pct and jobs have increased more than 18 pct. Vancouver secured 93 pct of it's electric power from British Columbia-based renewable sources. The city has implemented the greenest building code in North America, stresses energy efficiency and other measures aimed at encouraging and support a low-carbon economy and addressing climate change.

    Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy Snares Bunge Ethanol Plant Stake (Ind. Report, M&A)

    White Plains, NY-based agribusiness major and ethanol producer Bunge Ltd is reporting the sale of its equity stake in an ethanol plant in Iowa to Council Bluffs-based Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy LLC (SIRE). Under the deal Bunge will purchase all of the plant's the ethanol production.

    According to its website, SIRE is a dry-mill grain processing facility that produces over 110 million gpy of fuel grade ethanol, over 365,000 tpy of Dried Distillers' Grain (DDGs) with the ability to produce Wet Distiller Grains (WDGs), as well as approximately 90,000 ppd of corn oil. The facility will consume over 44.6 million bpy of corn feedstock from southwestern Iowa and several counties in southeast Nebraska.
