Amazon Announces New Data Center Wind Power Sources (Ind. Report)

Internet retail giant Amazon's cloud computing platform Amazon Web Services (AWS) is reporting new three wind projects as part of its goal to power its entire web services infrastructure with renewable energy. The three new wind projects will power AWS data centres in Ireland, Sweden, and the US.

AWS will purchase the output of a new 91.2MW project in Donegal, Ireland, expected to be online by the end of 2021. AWS will also purchase 91MW of power from a new wind farm in Bäckhammar, Sweden, to deliver energy by the end of 2020. Thirdly, a wind project in California, US, will provide up to 47MW of wind power to AWS by the end of 2020. The names of the projects or developers have not been disclosed. OCBC Bank, Sinosure Ink Green Energy Co-op Agreement (Int'l)

Singapore-headquartered OCBC Bank and China's Beijing-based state-funded Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure) are reporting a Framework Agreement of Cooperation formalizing a partnership to support green and sustainable industries projects related to: renewable energy, clean transportation; climate change adaptation; energy efficiency; green buildings; and others.

Under this Agreement, OCBC Bank and Sinosure will study projects and investment opportunities together, leveraging each other's experience and channels to boost economic, trade and investment cooperation between the People's Republic of China and Singapore. Sinosure will provide the insurance coverage with respect to OCBC Bank's financing activities of these sustainable projects or other qualifying projects. Aussie Micro-Algae Bio-crude Specialist Goes Broke (Int'l)

In the Land Down Under, Whyalla, South Australia based microalgae - advanced bio-crude startup company Mursadel is reported to have been placed in voluntary administration -- Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection.

Muradel developed Green2Black, a proprietary way of producing biofuel from biosolids, algae and other sustainable feedstocks. The company's $10.5 million demonstration plant in Whyalla in a bid to commercialize the technology which received $4.5 million in grant funding from the Federal Government's Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and more than $500,000 in state and council funds. Unfortunately, production costs were prohibitive - the pilot plant produced oil from micro-algae at about $9.90 a litre against a projected cost of less than $1 a litre. The company also built five algae ponds to support research.

The business was established in 2010 by the University of Adelaide, Murdoch University and majority shareholder SQC Pty Ltd, which is solely funded by Aban Australia Pty Ltd. Imec, Jolywood Boast Record Solar Cell Efficiency (Ind. Report)

Leuvin, Belgium-headquartered Imec reports its n-PERT (Passivated Emitter and Rear Totally diffused) solar cells developed with Jolywood, a Chinese manufacturer of n-type bifacial solar cells and modules, reached a certified front-side conversion efficiency of 23.2 pct, as certified by ISFH CalTec.

The developed n-PERT technology has a number of inherent advantages over p-type PERC cell technology, which is demonstrated in these newest cells: the potential for higher efficiencies because of lower sensitivity to metal impurities, and the absence of light-induced degradation (LID). Therefore, n-type PERT technology could become a cost-effective contender for -type PERC cells. To enable this, the current cells have a screen printed front grid and rear soldering pads which together amounts to less than 80mg of silver used per cell.

The bifacial n-PERT cells are expected to reach efficiencies above 23.5 pct, coupled to a bifaciality above 90 pct. UK Energy Savings Trust Touting Cash Saving App (Int'l Report)

In the UK, the Energy Saving Trust reports it has developed a new app to help smart meter installers give timely and tailored energy efficiency advice. The energy saving advice tool is being trialled this month by energy companies before a full roll-out.

The app draws on Energy Savings Trust data, information and insight, and looks at each home individually as it gets its meter installed, giving an overview of a home's four key rooms and appliances to identify potential energy use cutbacks and financial savings. The app is designed to be used by primarily by energy suppliers and smart meter installers. Natural Forests Best for Fighting Climate Change (Ind. Report)

In the UK, researchers at the University of Edinburgh and University College London have found that natural forests store more carbon for longer periods compared to plantations and agroforestry. The researchers found the carbon sequestration potential of natural forests is 40 times greater than that of plantations, reforestation and re-greening efforts and the cultivation of commercial crops.

In reaching their conclusions, the researchers examined commitments made by 43 countries in tropical and subtropical regions, where trees grow faster and thus hold greater promise of removing atmospheric carbon.

These countries have pledged as of October 2017 to restore a combined 2.92 million square kilometers (1.13 million square miles) of degraded and deforested land -- an area almost twice the size of Alaska. Some of these are national commitments, while others were made under the Bonn Challenge launched in 2011 by the German government and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The latter initiative aims to restore 3.5 million square kilometers (1.35 million square miles) of degraded and deforested land by 2030 -- greater than the land mass of India.

The researcher's analysis found that at present, 45 pct of the commitments made by the 43 countries involve planting commercially profitable trees. Many of these plantations are expected to occur in countries like Brazil, China, Indonesia, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In China, 98.8 pct of the area to be restored will host plantations. In Brazil, it's just over 80 pct of the targeted restoration area, with well under 1 pct for natural forests. Renewables Cut CO2 Emission Better than CCS (Ind. Report)

Chemistry World is reporting an international team of researchers has concluded that solar and wind power are more effective at cutting CO2 emissions than carbon capture and storage (CCS). In reaching their conclusion, the researchers considered the poor uptake of CCS technologies in fossil fuel power plants against their energy return on energy invested (EROEI), the researchers found that while CCS technologies could reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they are insufficient to fulfill their planned role in reaching climate change targets by 2050.

The research team found that while CCS has an EROEI of between 6.6 and 21.3, renewables have a potential EROEI of between 9 and 30+. The researcher team also found renewable energy was likely to be a more effective path to meeting climate change goals. (Source: Chemistry World, April, 2019)

EU-funded, China CO2-Capture Project to Miss 2020 Deadline (Int'l)

According to an EU Observer report, it is unlikely that the EU and China will meet their goal of establishing an EU co-financed "near-zero emissions", carbon capture and storage (CCS) equipped coal fired power plant operation in China by 2020. China and the EU partnered and agreed to the project at a previous summit, in Beijing in September 2005.

However, Chinese companies financed a feasibility study for the project without EU funding, leading the EC to argue its planned €7 million contribution to the project was no longer possible. Even so, the EC notes it remains committed to an expert dialogue with China on CCUS.

According to the Melbourne, Australia-based Global CCS Institute, there are nine large-scale CCS facilities in China "in different stages of advancement" with only one such facility in operation. But China's four fossil-based power plants with CCS are all still in early development phase and not expected to be fully operational until somewhere in the 2020s. To date, the EU has not managed to get CCS projects into operation. Hydrogenics Inks NZ Green Hydrogen Production Station Deal (Int'l)

Mississauga, Ontario-headquartered hydrogen specialist Hydrogenics Corporation reports it has inked a supply agreement with Halcyon Power -- a joint venture of New Zealand-based Tuaropaki Trust and Obayashi Corporation of Japan -- for a carbon-free, 1.5 MW hydrogen production facility in New Zealand.The project is expected to be fully operational in 2020.

The carbon-neutral "green" hydrogen will be generated using electricity from stable, cost-effective geothermal energy in Mokai, Taupo, located adjacent to an existing Tuaropaki power plant.

Hydrogenics will provide an onsite hydrogen production plant using the Company's large-scale containerized PEM electrolysis technology to produce as much as 250Nm3 per hour of hydrogen. UK Parliament Pension Rethinking Fossil Fuel Investments (Int'l)

The Guardian is reporting Trustees of the UK Parliamentarian's pension fund are reconsidering rules of investments to take climate change risks into account,. but not excluding fossil fuel and other high emissions organizations, in their investment decisions. At the same time, the Trustees are not committing to fully divest from high emission operations fossil fuels, but will consider such a move.

According to the Guardian report, nearly two-thirds of the UK's university and other public pension funds have either divested or reformed their rules, though some have retained their fossil fuel focus despite strong public pressure.

Presently, five of the fund's top 20 investments, representing more than £20 million are in fossil fuel companies including the UK-based BP, which makes up the biggest single shareholding by the fund. SDTC Commits $10.4Mn to Fortress Bioproducts Demo (Funding)

British Columbia-based Fortress Global Enterprises Inc. reports its wholly-owned subsidiary, Fortress Xylitol Inc., has inked an agreement with Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) under which SDTC will contribute $10.4 million in funding to support the planned construction and operation of a xylitol and complementary bioproducts demonstration plant at Fortress' dissolving pulp mill in Thurso, Que. The funding is additional to Natural Resources Canada's (NRC) previously announced funding and an anticipated provincial investment and loan of up to $7 million.

The demonstration plant project is intended to demonstrate technology for the co-production of value-added and sustainable bioproducts that will help transform the wood pulp mill into a biorefinery. The process is expected to validate performance and produce pre-commercial quantities of food-grade xylitol and complementary bioproducts for testing and use by customers. Fortress also operates in the renewable energy generation sector through its cogeneration facility. Shell Plans $300Mn Investment to Offset Carbon Emissions (Int'l)

Oil major Royal Dutch Shell reports it plans to invest $300 million in forests, wetlands and other natural ecosystems around the world over the next three years as part of its strategy to "act on global climate change." The investment programme will contribute to the Shell Group's three-year target, beginning in 2019, to reduce its net carbon footprint by between 2 pct and 3 pct, according to Shell.

Projects in Shell's pipeline include a 5 million tree planting initiative in the Netherlands, a 300-hectare reforestation project in Spain and an 800-hectare endangered native forest regeneration project in the state of Queensland. Turks Plan $11Bn in Energy Efficiency Investments (Int'l)

Speaking at the 5th Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue in Germany, Turkey's Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced his country's government plans to invest roughly $11 billion over the next five years in an effort to cut energy consumption by 14 pct and reduce 66 million tons of CO2 emissions.

According to the Minister, Turkey's energy transition plan has two periods, the first of which was launched 17 years ago. At the end of the first transition period, Turkey was able to implement all relevant market reforms and the Turkish energy market attracted $60 billion in energy related investment, primarily in wind and solar energy production and technologies.

Bayraktar noted that Turkey prioritizes its energy infrastructure, so it will make significant investments to make its grid more resilient and reliable in both the gas and power sectors at the transmission and distribution levels. Perdue Notes "Positive" Chinese Ethanol Tariff Talks (Ind. Report)

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was commenting on the progress of his "positive" talks with China about reducing Beijing's 70 pct "retaliatory" tariff on U.S. ethanol products. In his comments, Perdue also noted that he wanted the EPA to more tightly control its use of small refinery "hardship" waivers that exempt plants from their obligation to blend biofuels like corn-based ethanol under the Renewable Fuel Standard. Shell Quitting AFPM Over Climate Change Policy "Misalignment" (Int'l)

Citing "material misalignment" over climate change policy differences, petroleum industry giant Royal Dutch Shell Plc has announced it will leave the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM)in 2020.

Shell claims its move is in line with the 2015 Paris climate agreement's goals to limit global warming by reducing carbon emissions to a net zero by the end of the century. It is also reflects investor pressure on oil companies, particularly in Europe, to change in their behavior around climate. Along that line, in 2018 Shell announced plans to introduce industry-leading carbon emissions targets linked to executive pay. EDF Announces Hydrogen Fuel Subsidiary Hynamics B.V. (Int'l)

Paris-headquartered French energy supplier Electricite de France (EDF) is reporting the establishment of Hynamics B.V., a new subsidiary headquartered in Dongen, the Netherlands. The new company will develop a range of hydrogen solutions for industrial and mobility customers through ivestments in hydrogen production plants and infrastructure solutions such as filling stations for commercial vehicle fleets, and has identified around 40 target projects in Europe, according to a press release.

Hynamics plans to generate hydrogen through water electrolysis, which would reduce CO2 emissions to zero. Canadian Global Warming Over TWICE GLOBAL RATE! (Ind. Report)

According to the Environment and Climate Change Canada commissioned study -- Canada's Changing Climate Report (CCCR) -- Canada is, on average, experiencing warming at double the rate of the rest of the world, with Northern Canada heating up at almost three times the global average.

Since 1948, Canada's annual average temperature over land has warmed 1.7 C, with higher rates seen in the North, the Prairies and northern British Columbia. In Northern Canada, the annual average temperature has increased by 2.3 C.

The CCCR reports also claims Canada is experiencing increases in precipitation (particularly in winter), "extreme fire weather" and water supply shortages in summer, and a heightened risk of coastal flooding.

The document says that while warming in Canada has been the result of both human activity and natural variations in the climate, "the human factor is dominant," especially emissions of greenhouse gases. The report says the national annual average temperature increase projected for the late century, compared to the reference period of 1986-2005, ranges from a "low-emission scenario" of 1.8 C to a "high-emission scenario" of 6.3 C. The report also predicts glaciers in western Canada will lose between 74 and 96 pct of their volume by the end of the century.

Palm Oil Producers Partner to Protest EU Directive (Int'l)

Reporting from Kuala Lumpur, the governments of Malaysia and Indonesian have announced the two major global palm oil producers will, under the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries, (CPOPC) embark on a joint mission to Brussels this week to register a firm objection to the Delegated Regulation Supplementing Directive 2018/2021 of the European Union Renewable Energy Directive II.

According to the release, "Malaysia has argued that the law discriminates against biofuels and bioliquids produced from palm oil and other oil crops. There is also significant lack of scientific data and reliable information used in the Delegated Regulation which classifies palm oil production as a high Indirect Land Use Change risk biofuel feedstock."

"Malaysia urges the European Union to provide equitable treatment across all oil crop biofuels and bioliquids in line with the World Trade Organization non-discriminative principles. Malaysia will continue to overcome disruptive and discriminatory practices on suppressing the palm oil trade," the release added. Idaho Power, Jackpot Holdings Ink 20-Year Solar PPA (Ind. Report)

Idaho Power reports it and Jackpot Holdings, LLC have inked a 20-year solar energy PPA at the low rate of $21.75 per MWh -- less than 2.2 cents per kWh. The solar power will be generated from a future 120-MW solar project enear Twin Falls, Idaho, which is expected to come online expected to come online in 2022.

The Jackpot Holdings agreement will help replace energy produced by the North Valmy coal-fired plant in Nevada, where Idaho Power recently agreed to end operations. The PPA supports Idaho Power's goal of providing 100 pct clean energy by 2045. The PPA is subject to Idaho Public Utilities Commission approval. Clallam PUD Announces Pilot Community Solar Project (Ind Report)

In Washington State, the Clallam County Public Utility District (PUD) reports it is constructing a $115,917, 30-kilowatt community solar project array at a former PUD substation in Sequimt. The community solar array will offer 15-watt solar units to customers and will be eligible for financial incentives from the state.

Green Bldg Role in Mitigating Eco Problems Studied (Ind. Report)

As part of its Living Standard initiative, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has released a new report titled Standard Issue to better gauge how the public feels about issues at the core of the green building community's mission: sustainability and the environment. The report looks at Americans' views on environmental concerns and how the green building industry can be better positioned as a global solution.

The report found, while three-quarters of respondents said environmental problems are very or somewhat important to them, they do little to address the problems in their own lives, considering it too daunting a task, and do not typically associate green buildings with being part of the solution.

The research suggests there is a gap between the enormity of the problem and how people seek to address it in their daily lives, and the green building community can mobilize and inspire change by connecting messaging to healthy outcomes for human beings. Aspen CORE Funds $1.29Mn in Energy Grants, Rebates (Ind Report)

In Aspen, Colorado, the not-for-profit Community Office for Resource Efficiency (CORE) reports it issued rebates and grant funding totaling $1.29 million ifor energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in the Roaring Fork Valley in 2018. the form of grants and rebates, according to its annual impact report, which was released in March. The agency is partially funded by carbon mitigation fees paid by developers.

CORE's 2018 investments include a robust grant program that has awarded $750,000 for energy efficiency and clean energy, leveraging an investment of $13 million in projects across the Roaring Fork Valley. Grants awarded include projects like Basalt Vista Affordable Housing, the first-ever net-zero neighborhood, and solar photovoltaic (PV) on Snowmass Village Town Hall. An additional $540,000 was provided to residential and commercial property owners through a rebate program.

In 2018, approximately 289 energy projects were completed and over 370 homes received a home energy assessment -- one of CORE's flagship programs -- valued at over $600 and available to residents year-round for a $100 cost. Germany says Emissions Tumbled with 2018's Warm Weather (Int'l)

In Bonn, the German Environment Ministry reports the country's greenhouse gas emissions fell 4.2 pct in 2018, the first important decrease in Europe's biggest economy four years, thanks largely to a warm climate. The Environment Ministry notes Germany released the equal of 868.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide last year -- 38 million tons less than 2017.

Total emissions in Germany a year ago were approximately 30.6 pct lower compared to 1990. The government had aimed to cut on them 40 pct next year as part of attempts to curb climate change, but has confessed that target will be missed by it. It has set a new goal of reducing emissions by 2030 by at least 55 pct from the 1990 baseline year.

Brightmark Touts Dairy Anaerobic Digestion Biogas Project (Ind Report)

San Francisco-headquartered Brightmark Energy is touting the launch of its recently completed biogas project in Yakima County, Washington. The anaerobic digester project will convert 150,000 gpd of dairy cattle manure waste from up to 7,000 cows into 160,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas (RNG) and other products each year.

Collaborating as Augean Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), Brightmark Energy, Promus Energy, and DeRuyter Dairies developed the project. Brightmark Energy will manage the joint venture and Promus Energy, the original developer, will serve as the project manager.

he Augean biogas project is supported by a $1.4 million in grant funding from Yakima County and a $500,000 Rural Energy for American Program (REAP) grant from the USDA.

Brightmark is currently developing similar biogas projects in New York, Wisconsin, Florida, and Minnesota, and is seeking feedstock suppliers with an interest in collaborating on waste to energy projects. The company develops, owns and operates waste and energy projects.

U.Maine Advances Honeywell Renewable Energy Project (Ind Report)

Following up on our 22 May, 2018 report, the University of Maine System trustees are reporting the authorization of up to $5.7 million to advance negotiations with Honeywell International for a long-term energy contract worth up to $165 million to shift the University of Maine systems Orono campus from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources including biomass.

The newly approved funds begin the second phase of negotiations, providing Honeywell up to $4.2 million to solidify the design and provide more precise information on the project scope and financials. The other $1.5 million is for the university to hire experts for its own work on the project. Once the second phase is completed, Honeywell will provide "a firm fixed price" for the Board's approval.

The energy system conversion is being driven in part by University of Maine's goal of virtually eliminating net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Honeywell says its project will achieve 85 percent of that goal. The university presently spends $10 million +- per year on electricity and heat. That expense could be cut to $4.3 million with a proposed new biomass power plant and solar array.

The proposed on campus 6-MW central heating and power plant would burn approximately 70,000 tpy of wood chips from sustainably harvested local timber. The CHP plant would use natural gas and oil or liquid biofuels as backups for its boilers, as well as the 40MW solar array. A similar but smaller biomass facility at the University of Maine at Farmington campus burns 4,000 tpy of locally harvested hardwood chips, and replaced nearly 400,000 gallons of oil. In Oslo, the Norwegian government has reportedly gien the nod for the country's $1 trillion oil-rich Sovereign Wealth Fund fund, the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, to start pumping as mush as $14 billion into wind, solar and other renewable energy power projects.

In March, Norway's sovereign wealth fund noted it would dispose of its investments in 134 companies that explore for oil and gas, worth almost $8 billion. But it is retaining stakes in oil firms such as Shell and BP that have renewable energy divisions.The Norwegian fund is also selling off its stakes in more coal companies, having set a new limit for them of 20 million tons of reserves. The fund divested $6.5 billion of coal-related investments in 2015.

APS Testing Woody Biomass for Power Generation (Ind. Report)

Following up on our Mar. 23rd coverage, in Phoenix, Arizona's largest utility Arizona Public Service (APS) Co. reports it plans to convert its coal-burning Cholla Power Plant near Holbrook to burn woody biomass waste and pine wood chips. The test conversion is intended to address the potential loss of jobs occasioned by an expected 2025 shutdown of the coal-burning facility to meet environmental-emissions regulations and to help prevent the growing wildfire-forest fire threat.

After a 60-day test period, AAPS will update the Arizona Corporation Commission regarding whether converting the coal generator to burn biomass would be cost efficient, officials said. Following the EnerGuide home energy evaluation, both home owners and renters will be able to access current rebate offers, financing options, a local contractor, list and energy coaching to increase home energy efficiency, cut energy consumption and save on energy costs.

The program offers two streams: the energy efficient home renovation stream provides incentives that support energy audits and access to rebates. The energy efficient new-home education stream provides training and access to information for all new home builders. The New Home program will encourage a standard of energy efficient construction as outlined in the BC Building Step Code.

In Finland, Helsinki mayor Jan Vapaavuori is reporting the launch of the €1 million Helsinki Challenge Competition aimed at heating the capital city without burning coal and tackling climate change. The mayor tweeted: "Helsinki Challenge: A million euros to the person who can develop a solution to replace coal burning in the heating of Helsinki in the most sustainable way possible, using the least biomass."

The Finnish capital has pledged to stop using coal for heating by the year 2029, as Finnish law prohibits using coal for the production of electricity and heat after this date. "The city feels it is sensible that an unsustainable fuel like coal is not replaced with another questionable fuel like biomass or nuclear", according to the mayor.

According to Helsinki city-owned power utility HELEN, half of its energy is currently produced with coal, but it plans to close its coal-fired Hanasaari power plant by the end of 2024. The utility has constructed 114 MW of alternative energy production in the form of a new wood pellet-fired heating plant in Salmisaari, and has also installed several solar facilities. Dubai Plans World's Largest Concentrated Solar Power System (Int'l)

In the UAE, Saudi Arabian firm ACWA Power reports it has been selected as the primary team for a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system to be constructed in Seih Al-Dahal, 30 miles south from Dubai. When commissioned and online in 2030, the project is expected to produce 950 MW of power total -- 250 megawatts from PV panels and a further 700 from CSP.

The Dubai CSP project's project molten salt tanks will store 15 hours of capacity. Beijing Issues Initial Carbon Market Emissions Trading Rules (Int'l)

In Beijing, China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment has issued the first set of draft rules for its long-awaited national carbon emissions trading scheme (ETS) since the platform's Dec., 2017, launch. The release of the document brings China, the world's biggest greenhouse gas emitter, closer to actual emissions trading that could help it meet commitments to tackle climate change.

According to the Ministry release, beginning next year both institutional and individual investors will be allowed to trade. Quotas for trading on the platform will be set and allocated by the State Council, the country's cabinet, based on economic growth, the country's "energy structure" and "other factors." Each unit in trading quotas will represent 1 tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent.

China plans to include all its coal-fired power plants, accounting for about 3 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, in the ETS from the first stage of trade, making it the world's biggest market for carbon emissions. Winnipeg Methane Capture Wins $1.3Mn Fed. Support (Funding)

On the Canadian prairies, the City of Winnipeg, the capital city of Manitoba reports it has accepted $1.3 million in federal grant funding to expand methane capture at its landfill -- the province's second largest methane emitter. The federal grant will be combined with $2.4 million from Winnipeg's landfill rehabilitation reserve. The Winnipeg landfill presently flares or burns up the methane.

The funding comes from the federal Low Carbon Economy Fund, which is focused in part on projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Winnipeg (population 720,000 +-) aims to reduce waste-related greenhouse gases by more than 1.1 million tonnes over the next 30 years and reduce methane gas emissions at landfills by 75 pct by 2030. HECO Targets 2022 to Acquire More Renewable Energy (Ind. Report)

Following up on our 29 March coverage, in the Aloha State, with the planned closure of the coal-burning AES Hawaii power plant on Oahu and retirement of Maui's oldest oil-fired plant within the next five years, the Honolulu-headquartered Hawaiian Electric Companies (HECO) -- Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light -- is beginning phase two of an ambitious renewable resource procurement to continue the transition from fossil-fueled power generation to clean energy.

The second phase will be open to all variable renewable and storage resources, including solar and wind generation, renewables plus storage, standalone storage and grid services. The plan builds on Hawaiian Electric's successful acquisition in 2018 of the state's largest, lowest-cost portfolio of renewable generation. Pending PUC approval, the first projects would come online by 2022.

In the first phase of new renewables acquisition, the companies negotiated contracts for eight projects on three islands. Thus far, the commission has approved three on Oahu -- one on Maui Island and two on Hawaii Island that will add 247 MW of solar energy with almost 1 GWh of storage by the end of 2021.

In addition to generation and storage, the companies are seeking independent service providers to enlist customers to provide grid services such as capacity to shift electricity use from high to low demand periods and fast frequency response to help the grids maintain power quality and reliability. Making the Case for Building to Zero Carbon (Ind. Report)

In its recently released Making the Case for Building to Zero Carbon report, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) proves Zero Carbon Buildings offer meaningful greenhouse gas reductions and positive financial returns over a 25-year life-cycle. It also notes the business case for Zero Carbon Buildings is going to get stronger each year due to the rising cost of carbon pollution.

The report applies carbon reduction measures to seven building types -- low-rise office, mid-rise office, low-rise multi-unit residential, mid-rise multi-unit residential, primary school, big box retail and warehouse -- in the cities of Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.

The report found that the business case for Zero Carbon Buildings differs relatively little nationwide, despite differences in construction and utility costs, climate, carbon intensity of electricity, and other factors. Each region

Bio3Gen Touts Wastewater Algae-to-Biofuel Technology (Ind. Report)

In West Lafayette, Indiana, Purdue University affiliate startup Gen3Bio reports it is advancing a unique way to transform algae used to purify municipal wastewater into specialty bio-based chemicals such as biofuels or bioplastics. The company's "patented enzyme technology breaks open the algae and takes out the sugars, fats and proteins, and converts those into specialty chemicals. It's a way to keep the carbon cycle going by renewing the use of the algae into useful and safe products," according to Bio3Gen founder and CEO Kelvin Okamoto.

Gen3Bio has been accepted into two accelerator programs focused on advancing new environmentally friendly technologies -- the BREW in Milwaukee and Carbontech Labs in San Francisco.

The BREW accelerator, sponsored by The Water Council, focuses on fresh water, wastewater treatment and water treatment technologies.The BREW accelerator offers selected companies $50,000 in funds, connections to office and research space, and access to mentors. At the end of the program in June, Gen3bio, along with the other participants, will pitch their technologies to a panel of investors.

Gen3Bio received assistance from the Purdue Foundry, a startup accelerator that works with any Indiana-based company. The technology is patented and exclusively licensed from the University of Toledo. Boise Plans 100 pct Renewable Energy by 2035 (Ind. Report)

The city of Boise, Idaho, reports it has committed to 100 pct clean electricity use in all homes and businesses by 2035, making it one of more than 100 cities nationwide to do so.

The city's plan encourages residential and business customers to participate in Idaho Power's various programs to curb electric power consumption. The utility's programs include rebates on energy-efficient products and summer discounts for customers who let the utility turn off their air conditioners temporarily on hot summer days. The plan also means more builders will be encouraged to meet the city’s green-building standards. Approximately half of Boise's energy use in buildings comes from natural gas, according to the city's energy plan.

The city plan follows Idaho Power's recent announcement that it would push to operate its grid entirely on clean energy by 2045, a shift that would end its use of coal and natural gas. The utility has already cut its reliance on those carbon-burning fuels sharply as it has added solar and wind sources.
